Red County Interview: Bill Simon On Rudy Giuliani
Orange County Register Blog ^ | February 14, 2007 | Bill Simon Interview

Posted on 02/16/2007 7:53:31 PM PST by BunnySlippers

Bill Simon: I think Rudy will make an extraordinary President. I don't know of anyone I'm in 100% agreement with respect to every issue -- even my fellow conservatives. So I'm not troubled if I don't agree with someone on every issue as long as they demonstrate very strong leadership qualities, which Rudy does, and a very strong sense of public service, which Rudy does, and a very firm agenda in areas that are important to me and in a way in which he can execute -- all of which Rudy does.

When you think about the priorities he's expressed -- things like national security -- I don't know of anyone better in the public arena now who can handle issues of national security better than Mayor Giuliani.

And when you talk about issues related to fiscal conservatism, which are important to Rudy, I don't know anybody in the public arena who has cut taxes 23 times as Rudy did when he was mayor of New York; who has shrunk the size of government, which he did when he was mayor of New York; reduced the welfare rolls by over 50 percent, which he did when he was mayor of New York. And that's not going into reducing crime by 65% and many other things that he did while mayor in a situation that, before he became mayor, was widely regarded as the second toughest job in American politics, and was widely regarded as an ungovernable situation.

I think he did an extraordinary job as Mayor of New York in a Democrat-controlled environment, and being able to function as a fiscal conservative in that Democrat-controlled environment is an amazing achievement.

Cunningham: How long have you known Mayor Giuliani?

We're the conservative base. Those who are leaving are the social conservatives.

Social conservatives have long threatened the party ... and will give us Hillary if they persist.

That's right. We vote. We won't vote Rudy. Get used to it.
Socially, there's no difference between Rudy or Hillary. So, keep us or dump us. Suffer the consequences.

Maybe instead of a "liberal" Northeaster like Rudy we can get a bible-thumper from down south who is a closet homosexual.(See ted haggard).

Yee haw!!!!

I love this new GOP base!!! As long as you tote a bible around, we know you're the man for us!

Threats don't cut it. I voted for Reagan as governor of California and later as President. The GOP doesn't always run someone I like but I am loyal.

Loyalty is not your strong suit.

Get used to your new president.

Go ahead. Trash the Fiscal Conservative/Social Conservative base. Good luck winning elections, though.
If you choose make yourself a liberal bed, you'll be the one sleeping in it.

The problems you cite were mainly (not entirely) the fault of dems and RINOs, with the tacit support of a "compassionate" "conservative" perhaps too much like his wimp-of-a-father, and too willing to "reach across the aisle".

We will only have more of the same, or worse, if we go down the RINO path for the Republican presidential candidate.

We, as conservatives, MUST differentiate ourselves from the liberal demonRATS in order to WIN. To hold power for any length of time, we must govern AS conservatives, and not WIMP out like we have the last many years.

Electing a RINO as Republican president will set our party, and our country back for MANY years.

We need to settle on one of the true conservatives that is running, or is willing to run, in order to win and maintain power long enough to make lasting, CONSERVATIVE changes to our political and judicial system.

.....just cause he is from Calif?....haha.....you mean you think every Californian is liberal?.....LOL.....ignorance is bliss...I'm sure the Reagan's would disagree with you as well as Duncan Hunter, Rep. Rohrbacher and a host of others....you have every right to disagree with any of this...but saying there are no conservatives from Calif.. well I think one of our greatest Presidents was from Calif...do I need to tell you who?

What's the definition of "true conservative"? A god-fearing war monger who spends like a drunken Kennedy (Bush), or fiscal conservative like Rudy who doesn't mix his god and his politics? No one out there has the whole package.

And as far as setting back the party, too late for that. The 109th and Bush f*&% us for years. Rudy, as a centrist, is the only hope of getting an (R) in the White House, if appearances is all that matters to you. If not, put in your social conservative like Huckabee and watch Hillary laugh all the way to the Oval Office.

She has a shot against McLame -- but not against Rudy.

Don't kid yourself Corky.

Insist on running this RINO, or ANY RINO, and you will split the party and hand the demonRAT, whoever it is, the Presidency on a SILVER PLATTER (which may be what you, and other saboteurs on FR want anyway).

Well, look at all the CAPS!

The Orange Country Register is the premier paper in the most conservative county in California.

But the place I found it is the GOP Flash Report which is the official website of the Republican Party in California. The Simon interview is here on the GOP website:

Loyalty is not your strong suit.

I vote for a philosophy - Conservatism. I'm not stupid enough to simply vote for a letter of the alphabet. Anyone can put an (R) after their name if they think it'll win them an election.
Think "Arnold (R)".

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I'm used to the flames since my personal political views are pretty similar to Rudy's. I am sometimes stirred to defend illegal immigrants; I don't think they're nearly as bad as Tom Tancredo's guys think.

And as for social issues, I can take them or leave them. I don't think they make much difference at the federal level anyway. No intelligent politician is going to take on social issues because there is so much fear, loathing and outright hatred on both sides.

The RINO currently in office has run well in elections over the last 8 years, so maybe we need another one to keep an (R) in there.

Doc,

if you are a true conservative...that kind of talk makes us look bad...those are the tactics of the Kos Kiddies.... Do you need to be that vile to get your point across?
