Bush’s Legacy
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 16 February 2007 | Staff

...Many will be shocked to read on the following page a Beltway fixture such as the Washington Post’s David Broder suggesting that Bush is “poised for a political comeback.”

This is one chief executive whose much-maligned “failings” are really his strengths, whose “stubbornness” and “insularity” we hear of from the media gossip mills, and his alleged refusal to listen to bad news, are examples of a tenacious commitment to principle.

Nearly six years without a terrorist attack on the U.S.: It is hard to imagine any other of today’s political figures — Republican or Democrat — exhibiting the forcefulness to do the things that kept us safe by foiling numerous terrorist plots, such as: using the National Security Agency to monitor phone calls between terrorists and those living here; having the Treasury Department track terrorist financial transactions; and go — literally — to the ends of the earth to toughly, but legitimately, interrogate terrorist suspects.

An economic expansion that just will not quit:

When Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke appeared before the House Financial Services Committee this week, Chairman Barney Frank absurdly insisted that the economy was in subpar mode, and demanded to know why Bernanke was not considering lowering interest rates.

But Bush inherited an economy from Bill Clinton that was in free fall in January 2001. Recovering from two years of Fed tightening and a $7 trillion stock market meltdown that had some economists warning of depression, Bush was then faced with a terrorist attack costing 3,000 lives and $100 billion — not counting indirect costs.

By cutting taxes across the board on income and investment, he turned what would have crushed a lesser leader into a success story that rejuvenated this country’s fortunes and spirits.

The author summarizes with:

Leadership: With low approval ratings, a tough war on his hands and a hostile Congress to contend with, George W. Bush seems to be on the ropes. But his character and fortitude will lead to history judging him well.

I agree and I hope you do too.

I do agree. We saw what popular and poll watching got us. Keep praying for this man. Who knows if, like Reagan, we will ever see his type again.

Needs repeating:

But Bush inherited an economy from Bill Clinton that was in free fall in January 2001.

Bush is shopping around for a legacy,
just like Clinton did in his
last years as president.

Bush will be in the top 10 presidents, possibly higher when allthe fluff gets blown out due to time and distance. He has done a magnificent job and historians will not be fooled by the crappy reporting of the MSM.

And part of his greatness will be due to his unwillingness to compromise his principles in the face of polls.

From Bush's press conference the day after the election:

And so he and I both agreed in our meeting yesterday that it was appropriate that I accept his resignation. And so, the decision was made - actually, I thought we were going to do fine yesterday. Shows what I know. But I thought we were going to be fine in the election.

Legacy?

It will be known that America chose a flawed, but strong man in 2004 rather than a weak noodle as they realized the consequences of failing to deal with terrorism.

The nation needed to adapt to 21st century warfare. God Bless Rumsfeld for doing so.

Amongst other things.

1)His legacy will a willful disrespect for protecting our borders.
2)Being stubborn on too many issues to mention including a Justice Department running amouk.

3) Terrible Energy Policy. He isn't exactly warming up to alternative fuel research that we need to rid ourselves of foreign oil.

4)The Iraq War with no good way out. I understand why we went to Afghanistan to go after Bin Ladin. That made sense.

5) BioShield while a noble cause has been a dismal failure in execution. We still don't have a cure on the shelf in the event a nuke hits. Health and Human Services have been fumbling that ball for over a year.

6) Mexico seems to be able to do whatever they want on immigration.

7) Lost both the House and Senate in the last election.

I absolutely agree . . . and told John McCain so when I spoke with him after his a speech to a group of Ohio 'grassroots' Republicans today!

During our 10-minute conversation, which we conducted over the objection of his aide, I both complimented McCain on his strong support of the War (he shared some VERY 'earthy' comments about Reid, et al) and challenged him to carry the following message back to his fellow Republican Senators: Stand WITH the President and AGAINST the terrorist-enabling, tax-raising, death-supporting (anti-life) Democrats -- Republican senators must stand together or the Democrats and their MSM enablers will certainly destroy them separately! [He seemed genuinely surprised both by the strong support our group voiced for President Bush and the level of commitment we expressed for 'reinforcing' the troops in Iraq . . . I think he actually thought we would be more interested in GLOBAL WARMING -- which is what he emphasized during his opening comments . . . WRONG!]

FYI: Each item listed in your uninformed/unfair diatribe actually applies more to PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN than President Bush . . . And we all know what a terrible president (Reagan) he was!!

Excellent post. The liberals and all those who are unhappy with President Bush want to "support the troops" but also want to defeat America. Sooner or later this absurdity will come from background to foreground. When it does estimations of President Bush will soar.

The biggest source of unhappiness on the right seems to be too many illegal Mexicans or Bush lost the House and the Senate. I don't know what they are going to do in 2008 but in the meantime they are angry, angry, angry and more angry.

7) Lost both the House and Senate in the last election.

Which recent 2 term president didn't suffer major Congressional losses in either of their midterm elections?

Clinton, Reagan, Nixon, and Eisenhower all did.

That's your view. I thought Reagan was a decent President. My list wasn't a diatribe, just the facts as I see them. Do you think he is protecting our borders from a huge influx of illegals? Do you think there is an effective exit in Iraq on the horizon? For your information, I voted for Bush twice.

The illegal immigration issue will overrun this country and this administration is doing nothing to stop it. If you don't see that, suffer the consequences.

In many ways President Bush reminds me of Lincoln especially during the dark days of the Civil War.

I have a friend, once fairly conservative, turned liberal under the influence of his Education Estalishment Phd wife who has been very vocal against Bush. After nearly coming to blows about 6 months ago, we agreed to never discuss politics.

Last night over a glass or two at a local bistro, he rather sheepishly brought up how he hoped that "Petraeus would be sucessful in Iraq - because he's our last chance, if he fails then Iraq is lost."

I think it is dawning on some Democrats just how serious a loss in Iraq would be - and I don't think the Pelosi/Reid/Biden/Murtha axis has picked up on that fact yet.
