Russia threatens Poland over US missile bases

Russia threatens Poland over US missile bases

If Poland agrees to base parts of the US anti-missile defense system on its territory, Russia may retaliate by installing short- and medium-range missiles in the Kaliningrad enclave, which would effectively tear up the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) signed by Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev in 1987, General Youri Balujevsky, the Russian chief of staff, warned yesterday.

The Polish Foreign Ministry declined to comment. It is not clear what Russia's goals are in escalating the dispute over the US decision to install parts of the system in Poland and the Czech Republic. It may be just seeking to strengthen its bargaining position to wrestle other political and military concessions from the US. "The worst thing that Poland could do now would be to say 'Oh we need to drop the idea because Russia said this or that'. Poland needs to make an independent judgment of the implications of basing the anti-missile defense system for its national security," says Peter Brokes, expert at the Heritage Foundation, known for its close links to the Bush administration and its hard-line stance on Russia.

Russia is doing exactly what we would be doing if the situation was reversed.

Sheesh, they sure seem to be getting their panties in a twist over a completely defensive system. I wonder why that is? Could it be that after they got their a$$es handed to them in Chechnya about the only thing they have left to fight with is the few high quality nukes they polish every day?

I disagree.
This system is completely defensive and good for only a single purpose. They know we can't use it to defend against a major attack that they could throw at us, they are playing hardball just to stay in the game I think.

It sounds to me that the Russians know that the system will work as designed .

I agree. I'm rarely one to defend Russia (check my history), especially after last year's outbreak of "curious deaths" of Putin's opponents. But if the Russians developed some missile defense system and, say, gave it to Venezuela, you'd better believe we'd be planning on coming up with and deploying a system that could defeat it.

There's no such thing as a completely defensive system. Russia isn't stupid, and the missiles are going in Poland for a reason.

Could it be that after they got their a$$es handed to them in Chechnya

They got their asses handed to them in Chechnya in 1994, but they seem to have done reasonably well since (hint: there's not much of Chechnya left).

Are the missiles themselves going into Poland, or just the radar systems? I thought that there were going to be a lot of networked radar sites but not that many launch sites.

You've got to be kidding.... You really think if Venezuela installed ABMs on their territory we'd respond by installing short-ranged nuclear missiles nearby, in say Panama?

If you think that's rational then if you put up a fence it'd be ok for a neighbor to setup a cannon pointed into your livingroom?

Pffft...... Troll.

Missiles are to be located in Poland, radar systems - in Czech Republic.

When Russia helps Iran it's good, but when America wants to settle their defensive system in Poland it's wrong... What a hypocrisy...

Ok, where is that PAC-3 and THEL platform that kills these things?

Sheesh, they sure seem to be getting their panties in a twist over a completely defensive system. ==

This system is just violating the balance of the military power. Consider this: if you and me both has the long-barrel rifles and live in peace. But suddently you buy the new bullt-proff vest. What I should do if I do not trust you? Simple, I buy just new bullets which can penetrate your new vest.

Did Russia sell Iran the ballistic missiles or ABM. You compare uncompareble. It is just the polemic trick:).

This system is just violating the balance of the military power.

The days of MAD are over. Deal with it.

What I should do if I do not trust you?

Gee you might actually try living in peace with your neighbors instead of invading and subjugating them every century. I know it sounds crazy, but give it a try.

The Canadians don't bitch when we upgrade our nuclear arsenal. They know we'll never use it against a friendly country. So why don't you boys just put down the cheap vodka bottles, toss that thug Putin in the trash where he belongs, and at least try to act like a civilized country.

Simple, I buy just new bullets which can penetrate your new vest.

And then we just surround you with friendly folks who think like us and give them some of our shiny new bullet resistant vests which can eliminate the threat from your silly bullets.

You fools tried playing this game with us once before and you lost badly.

Why don't you just try acting like rational adults for a change. It would be so refreshing not to have to listen to the Kremlin talk nonsense for once.
