These are 50 caliber sniper rifles, if anyone is wondering..

They are accurate at very long distances..a mile at least.

" for use by border police "

To do what????

To shoot over the border at US troops?

Hey wait a minute, didn't Austria say the same thing when they sold the gas to the Germans ????

So what. Our arms have found their way into conflicts all over the world too. What did USSR think when we were supplying arms to the Afghan rebels? Those same arms are now being used against us there.

Deny deny deny and make counter accusations.

The Austrian reaction was as predictable as the fact that these weapons would inevitably end up in the hands of Iraqi insurgents.

Deep down the Austrians simply don't care. Styer made a lot of money and was blessed off to do so by their government. No one will take their profits away.

" and what happened to the rifles after they were delivered to Teheran ostensibly for use by border police was not the responsibility of her government"

They'll think that when some are used against their own citizens!!!

Hey, let's remember just who it was that sold F-14 Tomcats to Iran. Fortunately, it takes spare parts to maintain those and the source of those spares dried up rather quickly after the Iranian revolution.

Steyr wanted to sell in the US market, but stupid US import laws prevented it. Reality amounted to "let us sell in the USA, or we'll have to fill the Iranian order." As the US wouldn't budge, the company had to do business elsewhere.

Austria has no beef with Iran.

When you tell a foreign company (which needs sales to survive) "you can't sell here, and we don't want you to sell there", they tend to ignore you and go to where the buyers are.

A pity, as I want a Steyr .50!
