Mayor Rudy Giuliani on Non-Binding Resolutions (Larry King Live)
HotAir.Com ^ | Feb 14, 2007 | Interview on Larry King Live

Posted on 02/14/2007 9:22:08 PM PST by PhiKapMom

HotAir has a must see video of Rudy Giuliani talking about the senselessness of non-binding resolutions and what's wrong with Washington from the Mayor's appearance on Lary King Live. In case you haven't seen him make this case in the last few days, this is must see viewing:

http://hotair.com/archives/2007/02/14/video-rudy-on-non-binding-resolutions/?s=video

Transcript:

GIULIANI: I mean, you can look at the practical and common sense conclusion on that anyway you want. But there's something more important than that. We have a right of free speech in this country and we elect people to make decisions. Here's what I would prefer to see them do, though, if you ask me what's my view on that. The nonbinding resolution thing gets me more than are you for it or against it. I have tremendous respect for the people who feel that we either made a mistake going to war, who voted against the war, who now have come to the conclusion, changed their minds, they have every right to that, that it's wrong, you should, in a dynamic situation, keep questioning. What I don't like is the idea of a nonbinding resolution.

KING: Because?

GIULIANI: Because there's no decision.

KING: But it's a statement.

GIULIANI: Yes, but that's what you do. That's what Tim Russert does and that's what Rush Limbaugh does. That's what you guys do, you make comments. We pay them to make decisions, not just to make comments. We pay them to decide. The United States Congress does declarations, the war…

KING: So if you feel that way, withhold funds and that's the way you feel?

GIULIANI: The ones I think have a better understanding of what their responsibility is and are willing to take a risk are the ones who are saying we've got to hold back the funds, we've got to vote against the war or we're for the war. And maybe it's because I ran a government and I tend to be a decisive person. I like decisions. And I think one of the things wrong with Washington is they don't want to make tough decisions anymore. Nonbinding resolution about Iraq, no decision on immigration, no decision on Social Security reform, no decision on what to do about energy independence, no decision. You know why that happens? Because it's unpopular.

>>>>>Nonsense. Politics is for everyone ...

You're being naive. If politics was for everyone, we'd have 100% turnout on election day.

The Founders set the basic concepts and standards for our political system. YOU don't get to make the groundrules for political debate. Thats why I said, speak for yourself. Sometimes peoples passions get the best of them. JimRob has banned or suspended quite a few pro-Rudy FReepers in recent weeks and rightly so. We all have to watch our P`s & Q`s. But the fact remains. Some people are just too thin skinned to engage in honest and fair political debate. People must learn to use their intellect and keep their emotions in check.

I like what JimRob said earlier on this thread:

"And even more flabbergasted by the very vocal group of Rudy supporters that are blasting our members daily and hammering them over the head with their defenses of his totally indefensible liberal positions. Abortion. Partial birth abortion. Gay unions. Gay rights. Gun control. Illegal immigration. Liberal appointees.
>>>>>When conservatives argue so forcefully for this liberal bilge water, you've got to wonder when did some members of FR make a left turn into la la land."

>>>>>So here we are .... each with a different prognostication

The difference between us is night and day. I will support the most conservative candidate available in the race. You alreday have chosen to support a liberal. If somehow Rudy wins the nomination, the GOP will fracture, assuring a Democrat victory in 2008. More then likely, that means President Clinton, Part Deux.

I think the conventional wisdom is that he'd have a tougher time winning the nomination than the general election.

I don't disagree that it would disillusion many social conservatives who usually vote Republican, but if it came down to Hillary vs Rudy, there would be a lot of "lesser of two evils" discussions around America's kitchens.

Those who sponsored and support this resolution have made a stand...defeat freedom, hand the Iraqis over to worse thugs than Saddam & co, disrespect those that gave the ultimate sacrifice and those that are prepared to do so. Their stance is a clear aid to the enemies of the country to which they took the oath of office.

Last night, a poster whose name escapes me, but s/he's a poster I respect, stated that nobody's won the WH without carrying his home state. (I don't know if the premise is factual).

The poster went on to state that Rudy cannot win, because he can't carry NY.

Thinking that turn abour was fair play, I pondered how his candidate, Duncan Hunter, could possibly win the WH, since he can't carry CA.

I carried it further and determined that perhaps McCain will have to our guy, since he can likely carry his home state of AZ. Not sure Mitt can carry MA, but Brownback might carry KS. :0)

Wilson lost his home state of New Jersey when he beat Hughes in 1916.

I don't know if the premise is factual or not. I'll have to check.

I'd assert that it's probably far more likely that Giuliani could carry New York than Hunter could carry California.

The truth is either of them only have to carry the same states that Dubya did, which didn't include either of those two states.

Well, unless one views Wilson's home state as where he was born, as opposed to where he lived when elected president. Wilson joined the faculty of Princeton in 1890.

True enough, but if we are to believe the Bible belt sit out, the electoral map will have an entirely different look.

Because nobody has ever won the Presidency without winning his home state.

Torie has told me that Wilson won in 1916 without carrying his home state, NJ.

Thank you. I've been feeling a little bit out of place, what with the All Rudy, All The Time threads.

I think the right approach is to nominate someone who can appeal to as many types of conservatives as possible.

I supported George W. Bush in 2000 and 2004, despite some misgivings (I didn't like his position on the AWB, and remembered when he stuck his nose in to California politics by opposing Prop. 187). Still, I don't regret supporting him, as he has done a respectable job in at least a few areas.

That said, "I have gone this far, and will go no further." Any candidate that I support will be at least as conservative as George W. Bush, which is not a tall order, IMO.

Something never happens until it happens the first time. I'm not sure we've ever had a presidential election where both candidates came from the same state. Who knows what can happen. I'm from NY and I like Rudy's chances here.

Right now, I don't see a better alternative to beating Hillary. If he/she comes along I'd support him/her 100% percent. I'll support whoever wins the primaries. I hope you will as well -- there's too much at stake.

I agree with you 100%. I cannot believe what they want to do in the House with the DemocRATs in charge. Disgusting beyond belief.

The Dims are terrified of Rudy. They're desperate and don't know how to deal with a candidate like Rudy, so they try and smear him and trick voters into hating him.

If Rudy is the best candidate who can keep Her Heinous, Queen Hillary from claiming her throne, so be it.

Stop the insanity now!

I'm trying to understand all this Rudimania. Is he supposed to be so great because of himself, or because he is the "only one who can beat Hillary?"

I thought Freerepublic was a conservative website....

I have heard Sean Hannity supporting Gulianni...it drives me nuts!

OK..Sean is a NYer, and Rudy did a good job at 911, but COME ON!?!? That is a one trick pony at best, and more likely someone who is going to undermine our future security much worse by taking our guns, taxing us into a hole, and undermining our moral values with homosexual marriage and abortion.
