The fact that Mitt Romney is a Mormon is no secret. Scads of stories have been written about that very fact, and it's a regular topic of conversation among Washington's chattering class.
What effect Romney's religion will have on his chances at winning the 2008 Republican presidential nomination is much less clear. Some argue that evangelical voters, a core part of the GOP coalition, will never accept a Mormon candidate as one of their own. Others believe Romney's religion will become a non-issue as the campaign wears on.
Who's right? It's still too early to tell, but a look at recent survey data on the Mormon question suggests that Romney faces real skepticism about his religion among the Republican primary voters he needs to woo over the coming year. Thanks to Washington Post pollster extraordinaire Jon Cohen, we have all that information at our fingertips.

Just read half a dozen links on FreeRepublic.com that somehow reference the LDS Church, and it is very clear how strong the opposition is to the church among a significant segment of politically conservative America - the core base that has great influence in Republican primary elections....
Romney doesn't have a prayer of a chance, and he wouldn't even if he wasn't so wishy-washy-luke-warm (at best) on the very important moral and political issue of the right to life. Romney is and will remain a side-show on the road to the Presidential election of 2008 .... Like him or hate him, that is - in my opinion - the only conclusion/prediction that seems likely with respect to his candidacy.

They do it "by proxy". Which makes it even more strange than it sounds. They dig up the name of your grandmother, see that she wasn't baptized Mormon before she died, add her to the list and then... someone takes her place and is actually baptized.
No matter if grandma was never Mormon. They do it for her.

Many people are put off by some of the unusual and strange customs that are said to be part of Mormonism. The religion is very secretive and it leaves the outsiders to gain their information from books like, Shot through the Heart, and news stories like the Smart kidnapping. People don't understand that the kidnapper was not a regular LDS, they just know what they read and hear, and the press is never kind to Mormons.
That is a definition of a cult, and rightly so.
They are throwing the apple out on the table and watching conservatives carve him up. I see no problem with a Mormon in office. The Mormons that I have known/worked with were great Americans with a strong work ethic and what I would consider good values.
