You get what the subcontractors build for you. Without good oversight/mgmt you get Sh_T.

You can't generalize like that if you want to be a source of truth.

I was a subcontractor for years, and sometimes builders asked me to be extra careful about quality, but far more often, they asked me to cut corners. I refused.

That is exactly what I meant. You withstood the pressure and others don't. Also every builder uses and relies on subcontractors from the foundation to the roof. For each specialty there will usually be numerous crews doing the work to varying degrees of competency. For example you can have a great contractor with a 10 framing crews one of which is terrible causing serious problems in the houses they work in while the rest are very good. Without good supervision the problems are not caught. I've sub'd finish work and have seen this in action many times.

Yeah, I think it's probably more of a case that you only get as good of work out of the sub-contractors as the contractor asks, pays, and inspects for. The pay part is important, because while you wouldn't, many would take the job, and then cut corners to keep it profitable. The whole construction industry is full of corruption, cheating, and outright dishonesty. Not everyone in it, but the bad (and cheap ones) tend to drive a lot of the good ones out, and make a bad reputation for everyone involved.
