The popular image we have of Cleopatra is that of a beautiful queenEvolving standards of beauty, no doubt. Plus, back then nobody dissed the queen!

Better looking than the coin, but still, no cigar.

Victor Davis Hanson has said he believes the Cleo is ugly to be Roman propaganda.

Obviously.
THE closest I've seen to realistic images of the ancients are the pics at Pompeii (there may be others)Our standards of what is beautiful are different...I guess. Although I wonder about our standards...?

Bathsheba in Michalangelo's painting wouldn't win any beauty contest by modern standards.
It's possible that the Cleopatra on the coin is a few decades older than the 19 year old beauty queen fixed in our minds.
Should Reagan every appear on currency, it won't be the handsome young actor but that of a 70+ year old man.

Yes, you're right, it looks a lot like Joey Buttafuoco. I can't believe that you remembered how to spell his name, because I didn't.

Don't feel bad, I looked it up. I didn't want to make any embarrassing mistakes in the spelling:)

Plutarch said this about her:
'For Rome, who had never condescended to fear any nation or people, did in her time fear two human beings; one was Hannibal, and the other was a woman (ie Cleopatra).'

"Better looking but no cigar."
Yes, but imagine her with a seductive smile and a twinkle in her eye. Remember, much portaiture was very serious with the mouth closed. Actually, I didn't think that the sculpture of Anthony were so bad. Better looking than the older Ceasar. Also I think she looked as good as Queen Elizabeth, who had her admireers.
