Halfway down the trail to hell
In a shady meadow green,
Are the souls of all dead troopers camped
Near a good old-time canteen
And this eternal resting place
Is known as Fiddler's Green.
Marching past, straight through to hell,
The infantry are seen,
Accompanied by the Engineers,
Artillery and Marine,
For none but the shades of Cavalrymen
Dismount at Fiddlers' Green.
Though some go curving down the trail
To seek a warmer scene,
No trooper ever gets to Hell
Ere he's emptied his canteen,
And so rides back to drink again
With friends at Fiddlers' Green.
And so when man and horse go down
Beneath a saber keen,
Or in a roaring charge or fierce melee
You stop a bullet clean,
And the hostiles come to get your scalp,
Just empty your canteen,
And put your pistol to your head
And go to Fiddlers' Green.

The 508 was part of the 82nd Airborne - correct?
Sorry for your trouble. Your dad sounded like a wonderful man.
God rest him, and may the Good Lord be good to you and yours.

I'm sure you are proud to have had him for a father as I am pleased to have had him for a countryman.

Blessings to your family on this loss -- every American owes your father a debt we could never repay. Your parents obviously instilled in all of you a sense of duty, honor and patriotism...and it's wonderful to see your son following in the footsteps of greatness.
Thank you for your family's service and dedication to this country. May the Lord comfort you in the loss of your father.
