Ex-senator questions Fitzgerald's case
Former Sen. Fred Thompson, R-Tenn., went on the attack Tuesday against Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, saying the prosecutor had to have known from the start that it was not a crime to disclose Valerie Plame's CIA identity.
A fundraiser for the defense of I. Lewis Libby, Thompson depicted Fitzgerald as out of control, telling ABC News there was "no brake and no check and no balance" on the prosecutor.
Thompson's objections are the same ones Democratic politicians made in the 1990s about independent counsel Kenneth Starr, who spent six years investigating President Clinton and first lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.
In the same fashion, Republicans complained about the six-year investigation of independent counsel Lawrence Walsh into the Iran-Contra scandal of the Reagan years and the first Bush administration.
While he was a senator, Thompson urged Attorney General Janet Reno to seek an independent counsel to look into the fundraising scandal surrounding the 1996 presidential election and he was disappointed when she refused to do so. Congress eventually allowed the independent counsel statute to expire.
"When you put too much power in the hands of unelected, unaccountable people who have every incentive to focus massive resources onto one particular person who gets the plaudits in the media for doing so it's a bad thing," Thompson told ABC.
Unlike Starr, who was appointed by a panel of federal appeals court judges, Fitzgerald's Justice Department superiors appointed him to look into the CIA leak scandal. He has continued his duties as U.S. attorney in Chicago while investigating the Valerie Plame affair.
"Nobody's been charged with outing" Plame, Thompson told ABC. "The Justice Department knew that early on. The CIA should have known that early on.

Who the hell wrote this? There's no indication on the Yahoo page. AP? Reuters? Who?
"Now I suppose you'll tell me what all the hubbub's about."
"Son, Fitzgerald don't take a dump without a plan."
The Armitage/Woodward tape evidences that Wilson was blabbing all over Washington D.C. about his CIA trip. This was in early June, long before Novak decided to write a column. The story that Wilson was being persecuted by the White House is a myth, created by Wilson. Some journalists no doubt had sufficient knowledge that it was a myth.
Now that's a Gonzo ticket.
I thought he was day-ud!
I thought so too. Thompson has what is needed for VP, just like Cheney does! I think he would fit that position as if it were custom made for him! And he is out of govt right now, but what a great way to get back in! I love him on Law and Order mind you, but I would be willing to sacrifice that if he is!
My mind is also made up, Duncan Hunter is my candidate, at this point.
hey, that is an idea!
Here's our man!

Let me know if you'd like to join the Fred Thompson ping list.
No, the whitewater investigation resulted in scores of people going to jail and scores of people confessing to crimes. There was no crime in the Libby case.

Not to mention, people dead!
Since I'm not allowed to drive (medical stuff), may I just go sit in my car and honk a little? I promise to do it when most of the neighbors are at work where I don't become a nuisance.
I've always liked Thompson and was really surprised when he was chosen to portray the DA on Law and Order. I wouldn't have thought they would have wanted anyone who wasn't liberal.
Fred Thompson's a great actor too. Got his start playing himself in the movie version of the book, "Marie: A True Story", by Peter Maas (wrote Serpico). The book is the true story of how Thompson helped bring down Governor Ray Blanton.
Thompson would be a good #2 on anyone's ticket.

Hunter/Thompson '08 That'll make for a strange bumper sticker Hunter Thompson '08 |
Yeah, but that ruins the joke. Hunter/Thompson '08 would cause a lot of cognitive dissonance on the left. How could they not pull that lever? How could they pull that lever?
It would leave them with Fear and Loathing.
Can't these reporters simply reports the facts in front of them without rehearing Democrat arguments? Even in Starr's case, he was enouraged to go on fishing expeditions. In this instance, he got involved in a purely non-legal affair and feeling the need to justify himself refused to let go.
But it was such a balanced article, wasn't it?
