Giuliani or McCain: Both are bad choices (window dressing and a criminal)
WND ^ | February 13, 2007 | Mychal Massie

Many of you have hearts that are still a-flutter after watching the recent Rudy Giuliani love-fest on "Hannity and Colmes." But I implore you, do not be fooled by the packaging lest you forget we fooled ourselves in 2000, and apart from that candidate's appointment of John Roberts to the Supreme Court, his intractability pursuant to the war on terror and an overall good economy – we now have someone who refuses to halt illegal immigration and has abandoned border guards who should have received medals of valor for stopping illegal Mexican dope smuggling criminals, but instead received 11 and 12 years in prison. Rudy is no conservative – he is a liberal Republican. As mayor of New York City, Giuliani was an anti-gun, social liberal, fiscal moderate , who rid Times Square of prostitution and pornography and significantly curbed crime.

Rudy is window dressing in an empty house. ..................................................

John McCain, on the other hand, has been little more than an impediment from the beginning. He was one of the principle lawmakers involved in the "Keating Five" – a congressional scandal related to the worst savings and loan collapse in history. It was reported that he, along with four of his congressional counterparts, attempted to undermine and influence the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, which is responsible for regulating the banking industry, during its investigation of the Lincoln Savings and Loan collapse. It was also revealed that McCain and his counterparts had collectively received at least $1.3 million in campaign contributions from Charles Keating, the former chairman of said savings and loan, who was faulted with its failure.

To ensure that the voters never again have the ability to have such criminal activity revealed, or be reminded of same before the offenders are elected, McCain co-authored the McCain-Feingold Act

When I see people arguing that Bush has been inadequate on immigration I suspect that they are dem plants. Immigration wasn't even discused in the 2000 election. Republicans felt that tough immigration stances in California by Pete Wilson turned the state from red to blue. The fact that Bush has been willing to address this political live wire and try to guide the party on an issue that had been completely neglected for many years is a plus.

I am sorry that the instant gratification crowd refuses to understand that Mexicans don't wear magic shoes that will transport them home by clicking their heels three times like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. Impatience with the WOT or immigration is juvenile and counterproductive if not down right subversive.

Sorry, but whatever point this writer is attemting to make gets lost when I see drivel like this. The Federal Home Loan Bank Board doesn't regulate anything. It was abolished in 1989. And, when it did regulate something, that something was the savings and loan industry, not the banking industry. Banks are regulated by the Office of the Controller of the Currency.

The so-called "Keating Five" scandal was manufactured by the press, which was taking advantage of a period of regulatory excess in the banking and thrift industries. The next time somebody spouts off about how Charlie Keating was such an evil guy, ask the so-called expert just how much jail time Keating ever did.

We can go a lot further back than the Keating incident. McCain just couldn't wait to sell out his country to the VC.

I do recall a survey on FR taken 8 years ago that somehow manage to declare Alan Keyes as the "consensus" candidate.

I think Buchanan came in as the runner up and then he jumped ship. So much for the consensus coinciding with the populace at large. Too bad historical threads aren't available for review. Some are on wayback but not all.

Where on this thread have I mentioned anything at all about immigration, legal or illegal?

Did you misdirect your post?

Ronald Reagan was a pro-abortion, Hollywood actor, divorcee at one time, yet he turned out to be one of our greatest presidents.

Surely you jest. Alan Keyes is a knucklehead.

Yeah, that survey was back in the days before the FR highjacking by the BushBot faux conservatives, back when this forum was peopled by the knucklehead conservatives the site was designed for and advanced by.

Every candidate other than Hunter (who has as much chance as I do) seems to be unacceptable to my fellow Free Republicans. Why don't we all just sit this one out and make sure either Hillary or Obama is elected thus hastening the final demise of our once great Republic? Heaven forbid we elect a (shudder!) RINO.

Would you please explain what you are talking about in post #21, and why was directed to me?

Thanks in advance.

Wait a minute--and I'll not use the term 'red state' to indicate traditional Conservatism--tough illegal immigration stances didn't CHANGE the state's net allegiance from American to anti-American--it sought to preserve our American heritage, sovereignty and allegiance. Instant gratification isn't sought. Realistic, effective, Constitutionally-sound action by elected public servants IS. I'd like to see our President use the Bully Pulpit for much more 'guidance' in the borders issues. And I'd like to see a lot more (R) support for the President in Iraq!

No, I'm not, but my only post on this thread was about Mr. Poe's book and the forward by Jim Robinson.

Ouch. Not a fan of McCain, but this appears to be below the belt and really uncalled for.

I wonder how long you'd have lasted at the Hanoi Hilton, Maria.

Yeah, that's all well and good. And your support for Keyes has accomplished what? Convinced him to carpetbag into Illinois and run for Senator?

Oh, give me a break. I am no great fan of John McCain, but he endured a great deal of torture before signing a document that everyone knew was signed under extreme duress. The NVA knew full well who his father was and paid extra attention to him in the hope that they could break a high profile prisoner. Whatever his other failings might be, I would never think of second guessing him for his conduct as a prisoner, and neither should you.
