CHICAGO - Office nappers now have the perfect excuse: New research shows that a little midday snooze seems to reduce the risk of fatal heart problems, especially among men.

In the largest study to date on the health effects of napping, researchers tracked 23,681 healthy Greek adults for an average of about six years. Those who napped for about half an hour at least three times weekly had a 37 percent lower risk of dying from heart attacks or other heart problems than those who did not nap.

When I was in the Navy and serving onboard a ship, during lunch, instead of eating I would go down to my rack and catch a nooner. About a 30-40 minute nap and I would be great for the rest of the day. There are times in the civ world I wish I could do that.

Besides the health benefit, it would probably increase productivity and employee morale if employers would facilitate mid-day naps.

I always hate advocating what other countries do, but most countries (Europe & Latin America) require 1 1/2 hour lunch breaks. This allows many employees to go home, eat and rest. Unfortunately, here in the US, due to urban sprawl, it would be difficult to make it home and come back to work in a reasonable time.

It may not be the naps but the type of people that take take them. The Type A that pushes from sun up to sun down would probably be stressed about this. B types, would make it a priority:')

Older workers are more likely to nap, and are also more likely to be productive.

My thoughts exactly; it may be causal or symptomatic.

I think of my ancestors who reached their 80's and 90's. I know they did not have an easy life living off the land. They raised 10-12 children, grew their food, rode in wagons and on horses,no health care....how many naps did they get per week?

This is just more cultural encouragement for self indulgence.

Well, I'm an over-the-top type A, but I take a nap four or five times a week. I ALWAYS set a timer so that I can relax and not worry about oversleeping.

Yada, yada, yada.

I'd be my granddaddy out in the fields took a little snooze during the hottest part of the midday. I know because he said when he was older that he had been taking a nap his whole life! LOL

Forget the timer and worrying about over sleeping. Your body will waken when it is rested:')

Too type-A! I would worry that I would oversleep and forget to pick up a child at school or whatever!

Maybe. Maybe not. I just started my own business when I could have retired. I'm putting in a lot more hours than when I was on the clock but, I sometimes nap now.

Take your nap about an hour before the mail is delivered. Then you can relax and not have to worry because the mailman will wake you up:')

LOL! They never show that in 'western or pioneer' movies! And my great grandmother who came from TN to TX in a covered wagon, left that out of her memoirs!

You certainly deserve those naps...but how about the 22 year old forging his career? They just may need to to get to bed a little earlier.

I remember in college often taking a nap on a break between classes...but I had been up the night before either studying or yammering with friends. Once out in the work-place...never would have crossed my mind to nap.

There is nothing wrong with resting on your breaks. It would be inappropriate for the government to step in and regulate.. When has that ever stopped it though?
