Culture Warrior (Don't write off Giuliani's appeal to social conservatives)
Wall Street Journal ^ | Februrary 13, 2007 | BRENDAN MINITER

The book on Rudy Giuliani is that he is too liberal on social issues to win the Republican presidential nomination. Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, put it succinctly: "I don't see anyone getting the Republican nomination who is not pro-life and a staunch defender of traditional marriage."

But Mr. Giuliani is running strong in Iowa and New Hampshire polls and leading most national surveys of Republicans. He's charming crowds of conservatives everywhere he goes. So it's worth wondering if Mr. Perkins is missing an undercurrent coursing through conservative politics.

Republicans have just experienced a bruising midterm election defeat. The president is suffering dismal approval ratings, and its erstwhile front-runner for the presidential nomination, Sen. John McCain, made his national reputation as a "maverick." The Giuliani rise evident now may be more than name recognition and residual support from his stalwart leadership following the Sept. 11 attacks. Mr. Giuliani's support may also arise from his having successfully moved an entrenched political culture in New York City, something national Republicans have not been able to do in Washington.

I honestly do not know who it will be. I have one hunch. All the candidates the republicans are putting up right now are weak. Their records and positions are full of holes.
I think that Newt will enter the race next fall if no other candidate comes out and is strong with good republican support. He is my hunch. If he enters the race, he will win the nomination. On the other side, the hilderbeast will wrap up the nomination. There is no one else with her political savy and willingness to play the nasty political game out there right now. I believe that she will do anything to be the next president. I've never seen any person so hungry for power. Hillary and the Clinton political machine are the best at playing nasty politics that I have ever seen. The lady is ruthless! There is no doubt in my mind that Hillary will be our next president if the republicans do not get their act together and find a good candidate with a great strategy. I'm from the conservative side of the street but anyone who underestimates Hillary will be ground up and spit out by her political machine. She already has Obama's number and has him labeled as leaning towards Islam. It probably is not true but the Clinton political machine via the MNM put the doubt on him and the American people will not elect him. She nailed him before he ever got out of the blocks.

Frankly I am getting quite SICK of all the Giuliani bashing going on around here lately.

While I have no love lost for NYC (except for the Yankees, of course), I did grow up a part of my life there in the 1970s, and frankly some of you folks out in 'flyover country' don't have a clue about what it takes to get elected in NYC.

All these wonderful old quotes y'all are pulling out of your *sses were made during NYC campaigns - and remember that the first time around Giuliani lost to the "Doorman", David Dinkins, who was such an empty suit that 4 years later Rudy beat him.

Would you have preferred to have him run a Jesse Helms-campaign in NYC? And what - expect him to get elected with 10% of the vote?

Giuliani BARELY got elected in one of the most liberal cities in America - and then proceeded to clean up NYC like no other mayor had done since at least Fiorello Laguardia 50+ years earlier.

After many years away I did visit the city several times during Rudy's mayoralty, and was amazed at the fact that the Times Square area was clean of porn and dope fiends, middle class couples regularly took their children strolling in Central Park, and the City was cleaned up.

THAT, my fellow "Either Coast-haters", was as admirable an achievement as anything that came out of the 12-year GOP control of Congress.

Now, stop threatening to "take your marbles and go home" if Rudy is the nominee and GROW UP!

Giuliani's national campaign will be far more conservative than his campaigns for mayor. I am at least glad to hear some of you stating that you'll vote for him in November, if not in the Spring. My hunch is that this is what damn-near ALL of you will do if he's nominated.

And I'll say this one for all you MINDLESS Romney-haters (remember him? he pulled off one better than Rudy even and got himself elected Governor of Taxachusetts). Smarting that he didn't run like Jesse Helms up there and lose with 5% of the vote Einsteins?

Well, here is my prediction for you: The GOP nominee in 2008 will be either Rudy or Romney - maybe Rudy/Romney even. PERIOD. There is NO ONE else out there save McCain and we all know why we'd prefer not to vote for him.

Rudy is THE ONLY national candidate that you or I can absolutely trust to defend America, AND YOU KNOW IT.

That, the most important issue today, gives him an edge in the early going.

P.S. Just in case some braniac out there doesn't have a stroke, I guess I'd better fess up to being the #1 Jesse Helms fan who never lived in North Carolina. Even sent him a campaign contribution was back when. Loved to tell liberals that I wished we'd have 100 Senators like him - still do.

But honestly, folks - do you really expect a candidate running in the NE to sound like Jesse and have a prayer of being elected?

If he runs for real, Rudy will tack to the right in the primaries, and win in November by tacking back to the center. The old Dick Nixon strategy. The old Dick Nixon WINNING strategy.

Or would you prefer to have Hitlery Klintoon as your next CINC?

You did what?

Read your own post - why act like you don't know. Your sarcasm is NOT appreciated. You don't have to speak slower - just THINK slower before you post. When something is pointed out to you - you try to engage in an argument rather than coming to terms with what you posted. What do you have against truth?

Your reason for the major drop in crime in NYC is.... Gungrabbers like Giuliani don't get the criminal lawbreaker's guns...they're criminal lawbreakers. They only steal the God-given unalienable rights of God-fearing law-abiding citizen

So - according to you - only the criminals were left with guns while crime dropped dramatically.

Rudy may do well in NYC, but the president is elected by the electoral college which NYC does not have.
You seem to want to overlook all of us out there in fly over country but without us no republican candidate has a chance.

The possibility of getting prostate cancers rises with age, for all men.

In there 50s, 5 out of 10 men will get it, in their 60s, 6 out of 10, in their 70s, 7 out of 10 and so on and so on. Men in their late 90s and 90s are usually left untreated. For younger men, especially for men whose fathers had prostate cancer, it is best to get treatment! Once the cancer cells escape the wall of the prostate, it is VERY serious and urgent!

Rudy's father died of prostate cancer at an early age. It would have been not only FOOLHARDY, but ridiculous, for him to have ignored it! Not ALL prostate cancers are slow moving.

"You seem to want to overlook all of us out there in fly over country but without us no republican candidate has a chance."

While it pains me that I no longer live in Texas but in the People's Republic of CA, I am still with you in spirit (though between Rep Ellen Tauscher and my two Senate-w*tches I effectively am disenfranchised in DC).

And I know that if Rudy gets the nomination you'll vote for him - with enthusiasm when you see the "Stalin-in-a-dress" as his opponent....

do also recall that "the perfect is the enemy of the good".

Newt ain't running (can't win even if he did), and all these Representatives no one's ever heard of will be out before the primaries are half way done.....

Newt isn't going to run and he can't beat Hillary. His negatives are as bad, if not worse than hers. She and her husband, with the help of the MSM have already made him run away from his Speakership.

By waiting to decide until next October ( and I think that he has already decided not to run ), all of the BIG MONEY MEN, BIG political backing, and the best of the best for the teams will have been scooped up by the top three. Those people do NOT just jump ship.

Based on that correct info, would you care to make another prediction?

"Rudy's father died of prostate cancer at an early age. It would have been not only FOOLHARDY, but ridiculous, for him to have ignored it! Not ALL prostate cancers are slow moving."

So what's involved?

You get your prostate removed and take Viagra, or you get a radioactive thingie inserted. Takes 6 hours.

Why drop out of a race for senator for that, unless you are a looser...

I know pro-lifers and pro-gunners all across the country. Lots and lots and lots of them. As I said, take it to the bank,..

Yeah - you know it all AND everyone. Your posts show that - especially the comment - take it to the bank. It reeks so of 'used car salesman'. Reminder - there are conservatives on this site, they cannot be taken in with slick willy talk and can smell a lemon from afar.

Its not bashing, when you use facts and employ the truth. Its called legitimate criticism. All political candidates are subject to well-founded attacks. Since Rudy is a liberal, he's open to even more criticism. Get use to it and stop whining already. Rudy`s won't get the GOP nomination. Chew on that awhile.
