Some in party believe he (Giuliani) can win in California
San Diego Union Tribune ^ | Feb. 11, 2007 | John Marelius

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, still basking in his can-do post-Sept. 11 image, got a rousing welcome yesterday from Republican activists searching for a presidential candidate who can win in California.

No Republican presidential candidate has carried California since the elder George Bush did in 1988, and no one has even run a competitive race in the increasingly Democratic-leaning state since then.

Republicans are hopeful they have prospects in the large 2008 field who can reverse the trend by combining liberal and conservative stands that has proven so successful for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

“The popularity of the governor shows that you can take the positions that he holds and win in California,” said Duf Sundheim, outgoing Republican state chairman. “I think Giuliani has the same opportunity.”

As for Giuliani, backers say his record on reducing crime and taxes in New York should give conservatives plenty to like. He was introduced to the convention yesterday by businessman Bill Simon, the 2002 Republican nominee for California governor who once worked under Giuliani in the U.S. Attorney's Office in New York.

Simon said that as mayor, Giuliani cut taxes 23 times and reduced the city's murder rate by 67 percent. “That is a record that as a conservative Republican, I can heartily endorse,” he said.

I'd sure like to see the level of discussion raised. But then, I'm an optimist. ;-)

Ditto that sentiment. :-)

If it looks like he can take CA the big money and the suits will go to Rudy soon. Heck it's happening already.

Of course not. That's why I deliberately put in my "sarcasm disclaimer:"

I'll let you sift through my sarcasm.

The first part was designed to sound like a typical liberal moonbat.

Rudy can win in CA, the same way Arnold did, and that will be a major blow to the Dems for many years to come.

It would also be a major blow to Conservatives for many years to come...though probably less so that Hillary.

bump - read later.

And thanks for this, calcowgirl. A thread I had started on Rudy and social issues was spammed with the same thing. Looks like great work in setting the record straight

As a Duncan Hunter supporter, I hope the Rudy supporters do post what they think they have on Hunter.

What they think they have is on web sites of the far left.
I have seen them and have checked what they support.

It is an honor to have Hunter smeared by these people as it tells Hunter is doing his job for America and Conservative principles.

One smear site has for their list of source agenda,
SEIU CA (which is the huge Left Wing service union)
(Berkeley Labor Center) and other left wing groups.

Another Hunter Smear site has the following what they are about"

What We’re Fighting For:
Social and Economic Justice
Healthy Communities
Global Leadership
A Secure America
What We’re Fighting Against:
Corrupt Establishment
Incompetent Establishment
Braindead Media
Radical Right-Wing Agenda

Their threads are full of anti war, Global Warming, and
all the usual far left agenda.

Below is from another Hunter corruption smear site
one their anti war, anti Bush, etc.

There's an easy way to resolve all of this, Mr. Vice President: Just quit, so we can skip impeachment and proceed directly to your war-crimes trial

Other Left wing Hunter smear sites with the same anti war,
propaganda.

If those who hate Hunter want to believe this so call corruption, then what is also posted on these sites is
Far Left propaganda against Bush, America, the war, etc.
If you believe in the Hunter smear, then you also believe
the sites purpose and goals - Radical Far Left, anti Bush, anti war.

I don't know. I read one poll where CHRISTIAN EVANGELICALS supported him to the tune of around 60%.

You can take it to the bank that poll is not correct. Who knows what questions were asked, or who is considering themselves an "Evangelical".

I have been a So. Baptist for all of my 65 years, and people are coming out of the woodwork calling themselves Evangelicals that I have never heard of before.

It's even worse than I thought.

I saw this posted on FreeRepublic. I'll try to find the link, but for now:

"No other city Mayor in the United States has filed such an anti-gun lawsuit. New York City has the strictest gun control laws and literally thousands of guns were confiscated by Giuliani's troops. And Giuliani is proud of that fact:

MAYOR GIULIANI AND POLICE COMMISSIONER KERIK ANNOUNCE
MORE THAN 3,000 GUNS TAKEN OFF NEW YORK CITY STREETS
TO BE TURNED INTO SCRAP METAL

City Has Seized Almost 90,000 Guns Since 1994

Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani and Police Commissioner Bernard B. Kerik today announced that more than 3,000 guns taken off New York City streets will soon be turned into scrap metal. The New York Police Department recovered the guns over the last several months through a number of channels and the total includes guns that were used in the commission of crimes. The guns will be transported to an undisclosed location, where they will be smelted and the metal recycled. NYPD personnel will monitor every aspect of the entire process, until every gun has been destroyed.

"The Police Department's dramatic success in reducing crime is due in large part to its corresponding success in removing guns from City streets," the Mayor said. "More than 90,000 guns have been seized since 1994, and shootings have plummeted more than 74 percent. The NYPD's gun seizure success is also reflected in the murder rate, which has plummeted 65 percent since 1994, and is down another 11 percent this year over last year. The NYPD has also ensured that thousands of guns can never be used to commit a crime by destroying them and putting the metal to good use. Now, another 3,000 guns have been taken out of circulation -- permanently."

Police Commissioner Kerik said, "The destruction of these firearms is a very tangible reminder of the intensive efforts undertaken by the NYPD and the City to remove guns from our streets. Every gun taken out of circulation is one less gun that can be used to shoot an innocent citizen, gun down a hero cop, or carelessly end up in the hands of a child."

Including the guns to be destroyed following today's announcement, more than 7,371 guns will have been smelted this year to date. In 2000, the Police Department sent 8,278 guns to be smelted and turned into scrap metal.

You're happy with someone who is 80% liberal and 20% conservative. I am not.

Rudy is pro-abortion, pro-special rights for gays, pro-ILLEGAL immigration, pro-gun control and anti-freedom.

If this is OK with you, that is your problem.

You've got those numbers reversed; it's 80% conservative and 20% or less liberal and I'd rather have a glass 3/4 full than no glass at all.

If you would rather have nothing that that you want and everything you don't want, that's a conundrum, but your problem.

As I said 80%.

If you back a candidate who is pro-abortion, you are either ignorant or unkind.

"The President (damn, I have to explain again!) does not confiscate guns. Congress does. If you don't want your guns taken, elect conservative (mostly Republican) Representatives and Senators. The President cannot, singlehandedly, accomplish gun control!"

It seems that every time one of Rudy's leftist views come up, it is "explained away" with the president can't do this, or the president can't do that.

That's not good enough for me. I will vote in the primaries for a CONSERVATIVE.

I'm not from Wisconsin. We live in NYS, and my husband is from NYC, and my sister lives in NYC, and so does my husband's family, so I know all about it.

But all that doesn't change the fact that Rudy is pro-abortion, special rights for gays, gun control, illegal immigration.

I will not be voting for any liberal in the primaries.

The problem is that he has to win some of the other 49 states. What will happen, if he somehow wins the nomination, is that there will be a third party candidate/party that will peel off enough votes for him to lose in places like Texas and Georgia.

There is no realistic way to leave such a huge political vacuum on the right and not have it be filled by someone.
