Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.
"I used gun control as mayor," he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But "I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."
He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.
Addressing another potential trouble spot with conservatives, Giuliani spoke in favor of a border fence, saying, "You have to have secure borders, you have to have a fence, and the fence I think has to be a highly technological one."
The nation needs to know, he said, who is coming into the country and why. But he provided scant details on how he would deal with illegal immigrants already in the country. Citizens, he added, should be able to read and write English.
Giuliani was to make an address Monday in Silicon Valley and he was to appear Tuesday at an agricultural fair in the Central Valley.
Asked when he would make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination, Giuliani said: "Well, formally announce? I don't know."
He then alluded to making an announcement in multiple locations "so we get more attention" but provided no details.
Amen.

Earth to Rudy! Earth to Rudy!
Yeah, Rudy doesn't get it and never will. Don't think the NRA will endorse him. In fact they'll probably pass on endorsing anyone if its Rudy and whatever Dem.
I think you missed the point Rudy.
IMO our choice is gonna be him or Hillary. No other republican is gonna be able to beat him.
I have no problem with hunting either.....it's the people breaking into homes that I have a problem with. You can't uphold the constitution for some and not all Rudy.
Nobodies ever heard of this guy, he might have a shot...
[Cue voice of Cary Grant]
'Rudy, Rudy, Rudy'
You claim to understand the Second Amendment Mr. Mayor, and you think it has to do with hunter's rights?
Get a clue magoo, the Second Amendment is what keeps the OTHER amendments from being meaningless!
Our Founding Fathers NEVER wanted the American people to ever again be faced with an overbearing, dictatorial, lying, corrupt, overtaxing, underrepresenting, unaccountable bunch of imperial tyrants, and by guaranteeing the people the 'Right To Bear Arms', that was their way of saying "Here is your Constitutional Republic, here is your Constitutional Right to be armed with weapons to keep it that way, and to defend it by force if need be."
If Rudy thinks it's all about hunting, he might as well get out his blunderbuss, put on his Elmer Fudd hunting cap, and tell everybody to be "veeeewwwwwwwyyy quiiieeettt...we're hunting a waaaaaabbiittttt."
Note to Rudy Campaign:
There goes the NRA vote folks, nice job.
You know why there's a Second Amendment? In case the government fails to follow the first one.
~~~ Rush Limbaugh
"I say the Second Amendment is, in order of importance, the first amendment. It is America's First Freedom, the one right that protects all of the others. Among freedom of speech, of the press, of religion, of assembly, of redress of grievances, it is the first among equals. It alone offers the absolute capacity to live without fear. The right to keep and bear arms is the one right that allows "rights" to exist at all."
~~~ Charlton Heston, Former NRA President
Missed it by a country mile!
I have heard Giuliani say this very statement several times. Obviously, it is not a mistake or a rushed argument.
If Giuliani "understands" the Second Amendment, how come he always quotes it wrong?
He always leaves out the word "keep". That is an integral part of the wording. Either he doesn't know what it says or he is dissembling on the issue...
Either those of us who really understand the 2nd Amendment are such a distinct minority that no politician cares, or they are all just too thick-skulled to "get it." Either way, it is a problem.
I think you have to be pretty naive to think that Rudy 'missed the point'.
He knows full well what the point is and chooses to engage in diversionary tactics.
Let that tell you more about who Rudy serves than anything.
That's the first thing the comes to mind, of course.
And the second is that gun control can indeed have an effect on hunters, depending on what's on the banning agenda. Ted Kennedy annually tries to push through a ban on all ammo capable of penetrating body armor, which of course would include all rifle ammo. And yes, many hunters use rifles ;)
Rudy Giuliani never had the NRA vote. NRA members have known about Giuliani for years.
Someone needs to tell Rudy that no matter what he wants to do with control of guns, anyone breaking into my home while I am there will get their head blown off.
Lost my vote there. Goodbye Rudi.
