Giuliani: Gun control helped lower crime
Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.
"I used gun control as mayor," he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But "I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."
He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.
Addressing another potential trouble spot with conservatives, Giuliani spoke in favor of a border fence, saying, "You have to have secure borders, you have to have a fence, and the fence I think has to be a highly technological one."
The nation needs to know, he said, who is coming into the country and why. But he provided scant details on how he would deal with illegal immigrants already in the country. Citizens, he added, should be able to read and write English.
Giuliani was to make an address Monday in Silicon Valley and he was to appear Tuesday at an agricultural fair in the Central Valley.
Asked when he would make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination, Giuliani said: "Well, formally announce? I don't know."

ANNAZ POSTED: Wow, that's quite a quote. Not much more needs to be said.
You got that right, Anna. Sounds like something evil Hillary would say. It's downright frightening in its implications for America {{{shiver}}}.
Alberta's Child: If you were willing to violate the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution to achieve your objectives, why don't we just eliminate jury trials, prohibitions against unwarranted searches and seizures, etc. while we're at it?
Absolutely. I held my nose with Bush the second term. I WILL NEVER VOTE FOR RUDY!!!!!
the gun laws didn't change in NYC under Rudy. they were restrictive going in - he simply used the police to enforce them.
it sounds like most of the people on this thread - don't want any gun laws at all. they don't know what it is to live in an urban environment, they think the gun laws they have in rural Texas, will work in NYC. they don't want Texas to be forced to accept the same gun laws NYC has - and that's fine. but they also shouldn't be asking NYC to be forced to accept the same gun laws Texas has.
Anyone who thinks gun control works is out of touch.
Are Texas and New York City still subject to the same U.S. Constitution?
How many "last straws" are there?
Only if you didn't already know he was a gun grabber.

The Second amendment isn't about shooting animals, it's about shooting overbearing right stealing politicians.
in a place like NYC, if you "opened up" a full unrestricted 2A right including concealed carry to anyone who wanted it - do you realize how many 18 year old inner city "youths" would be carrying guns if they were as easy to buy as a can of soda, and if they could carry them legally with no fear of the police?
your approach seems to be - "after they use the gun to commit a crime, then we can get them". but that approach means that the robberies and muggings and killings have to occur FIRST - before anything can be done about it by law enforcement. such a system allows for no proactive use of law enforcement, the only check on such a system is that I have to carry my own gun and make like Wyatt Earp.
that system may work very well for people in the rest of the country - go ahead, keep it, I don't care. But I don't want it in an urban environment.
and that's fine. but they also shouldn't be asking NYC to be forced to accept the same gun laws Texas has.
NYC doesn't have to live under the US Constitution, we'll let them return to Great Britain.
As for carrying a gun in Times Square, I should be able to carry any gun I want any place I want in this country, up to and including the Capitol and the White House.
"He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting".
Typical, TYPICAL liberal, metrosexual, arrogant city crud. It's not about HUNTING you clueless....
And if the right were no longer infringed upon by big city statists, the honest citizens would be armed, resulting in less targets for the thugs.
We've seen this time and time again: more guns equals less crime.
The more learned about Rudy the less impressive he is. It appears he is an empty suit.
First talk about regulation of firearms as is reads in the seconm amendment (which refer to a regulated militia i.e. organized) and not to firearms.
This dependence on a technology hammer for every problem.
Confusion over second amendment as if it pertained to hunting.
The more he speaks the less popular he will become amongst conservative and thinking people and the more the kook left media will promote him as a strawman contestant for president.
your approach seems to be - "after they use the gun to commit a crime, then we can get them". but that approach means that the robberies and muggings and killings have to occur FIRST
No those things would only have to be attempted. Sure the morgue would be jammed for a while but losing a generation of scum would go a long way toward revitalizing NYC.
you want to test the blanket constitutionality of the 2A in the federal courts, all the way down to unrestricted concealed carry? the NRA doesn't, why not? they seem to be content with the current system. I'm not for any kind of sweeping federal guns - as I said, Texas shouldn't be forced to have NYC's gun laws.

Texas has "loose" gun laws. did they do anything to reduce the crime surge Houston has seen post-Katrina?
If you lived in NYC, you'd know that this approach would not work here. It's fine in most other places - go ahead and use it. But in an urban environment built around public transportation, with almost zero "personal space" while interacting with fellow citizens, having everyone armed just won't work.
Of course, when you import a bunch of thugs, you're going to get a crime surge. But, it would be even worse if there less armed citizens. We've seen the numbers, and it's pretty clear that more guns equals less crime.
