Giuliani: Gun control helped lower crime
Rudy Giuliani addressed a potentially troublesome issue with conservative voters, saying his policies as mayor to get handguns off the street helped reduce crime in New York.
"I used gun control as mayor," he said at a news conference Saturday during a swing through California. But "I understand the Second Amendment. I understand the right to bear arms."
He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting.
Addressing another potential trouble spot with conservatives, Giuliani spoke in favor of a border fence, saying, "You have to have secure borders, you have to have a fence, and the fence I think has to be a highly technological one."
The nation needs to know, he said, who is coming into the country and why. But he provided scant details on how he would deal with illegal immigrants already in the country. Citizens, he added, should be able to read and write English.
Giuliani was to make an address Monday in Silicon Valley and he was to appear Tuesday at an agricultural fair in the Central Valley.
Asked when he would make a formal announcement that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination, Giuliani said: "Well, formally announce? I don't know."

What does the 2nd Amendment have to do with hunting?
I thought his drop in crime was due to his crackdown on street thugs.
"He said what he did as mayor would have no effect on hunting"
I can remember Bill Clinton making nearly the exact statement.
No Rudi, no McCain, no Mitt, no way!
In the end, I will not vote for Rudy, as he would be just as abominable as Hilary.
Feel free to keep compromising your position and appeasing the left. That's how the Republican Party got as far left as it has gotten.
A reasonable man wouldn't vote for an unrepentant gun grabber that thinks gun owners are criminals.
Bravo Sierra.
Putting away repeat offenders really lowers the crime rate.
By making lightweight statements such as these, all Guiliani is doing is running to the right for the nomination. Ditto Romney and McPain. Their task right now is to deceive the conservative Repub base. They've already got the Rino leaning moderate Repubs in their pocket. Once in office, you'll see their true identity.
Duncan Hunter, on the other hand, is the real deal. He is a consistent conservative. I am for him all the way.
Either way, the dumicrat perty gets it's way. You can hope for dumicrat votes to get him in. Only an idiot would vote for someone that wants to make them a crimnal.
ditto.
Troubling hell! he's a lib through and through and this is just more proof. I wonder how much more proof people are going to need?seesh
As I noted previously this election is about stopping Hillary.
What are the chances that one day Ill be able to vote for, and not against a candidate.
You certainly nailed that one.
If Rudy gets elected, then 4 or 8 years from now, we'll have to find an even more liberal republican to have a chance to win an election. The cycle just keeps repeating itself.
I'm for stooping the cycle NOW!
BULLSHIT
Yes, but the pampered and protected Rudybot females won't care because he's handsome and has charisma.
>>You have a choice, vote Giuliani or say hello to a second Clinton presidency. So what's it gonna be?
>Welcome to FR. I like your proven Anybody But Hillary strategy -- after all, it worked so well for Kerry's Anybody But Bush crowd in 2004. /s
Exactly. A candidate whose campaign slogan is "I'm the Lesser of 2 Evils" is going to have a very tough time indeed.
Plus, you ain't seen nothin' yet until you've seen the MSM go after Rudy's messy, public philandering and divorces. Don't you remember what happened when Rudy ran for Senate against Hitlery?
OK, somebody please cut past Rudy's double-talk, and please answer some basic questions...
- Can you have any laws or regulations on guns and still honor the Second Amendment? In the same way you don't interpret free speech to allow for you to yell 'fire' in a theatre, isn't there some room for laws concerning guns? IF so, what kind of gun laws are OK, what kind are not? (Obviously, for example, a 9 year old boy shouldn't run around with a loaded gun. But should any adult be free to hold a gun in Time Square?)
- Regardless of the constitutional question... does the argument that gun control cuts down crime in a major crowded city carry any weight? I have to admit this is a tough one to argue with friends.
Honestly, I don't have an agenda on this... just asking some basic questions!
Best regards,
