LANDIS - A pregnant woman and the baby she was carrying died Tuesday night after a head-on collision with a Jeep driven by a man Kannapolis police were following at the intersection of South Main Street and West First Street.
Another infant child in the car did not appear injured, officials said
Officials did not release their names. They said the woman was eight months pregnant.
Reed Linn, Landis Volunteer Fire Department chief, said the wreck occurred about 5:15 p.m.
Linn said that after the wreck, the man was pinned underneath the Jeep. Emergency service workers had to use two airbag devices to lift the vehicle off the man.
Linn said the woman was pinned in her car and responders had to cut away the doors and roof to get her out. The infant child was in a seat and was not pinned, Linn said.
Landis Police Chief Reggie Faggart said the man driving the Jeep was traveling north on South Main Street at about 70 to 80 mph, with the woman headed south. The speed limit in the area is posted at 35 mph.
As of 9 p.m., police were still trying to learn the identity of the woman in the wreck, Faggart said.
The wreck occurred after a Kannapolis Police Department officer followed the driver of the red Jeep, Kannapolis Police Maj. Woody Chavis said.
He said the officer did not actually chase the driver, but began following him after a woman told the officer she saw the Jeep hit two vehicles in Kannapolis and keep driving.
Karen Page, 35, of Kannapolis, said she saw the vehicle go by and called 911. She said she also talked to an officer.
"I saw him hit two cars at first," she said. "And I followed him trying to get his license plate number."
Tommy Wilbanks, 24, of Kannapolis, said he was driving south on Main Street just in front of the pregnant woman. Wilbanks said he saw the wreck.
He said he watched the Jeep hit the white Saturn and fly into the air.
"He went up in the air and did about three or four flips," Wilbanks said.
He said he got out of his vehicle and went to help the woman.
"I tried to talk to her and told her everything's going to be OK," Wilbanks said. "All I could do was talk to her."
The names of the victims were not released and hospitals will not release patient information without a name.
You don't get it, do you? (And yes, I've noticed it too). The simple fact of the matter is that guessing at the immigration status based on someone's surname is not logic. It is presumption. And there's nothing wrong with it, as long as you don't pass it off as logic. With regard to the others on this thread, I refer you to my comment #36.
As I said, I don't even have to wait to hear the name. As for single-car accidents, I immediately think white, middle-class teenager.
Tragic; the headline made it sound as though the baby collided with the pregnant woman so I expected to read that she had been holding a baby on her lap when the crash occurred.
A. a driver with an Hispanic surname was involved in an accident,is easily defeated by observing that not all people with Hispanic surnames are illegal immigrants. The moment you fall back on words that indicate probability, such as "almost always," or whatever, you are speculating. Guesses, even educated ones (to which you are certainly entitled), are not examples of logic. In fact, now that I think about it (but I may be wrong), the logical fallacy itself is named an "error of distribution."
B. a good number of illegal immigrants have Hispanic surnames,
C. therefore, the driver is an illegal immigrant,
If they let him out on bail he will be gone in a blink of an eye. Happened here a couple of years ago. An illegal killed a fireman riding on a motorcycle. Pulled out directly in front of him. He did not have a chance. The illegal posted bail and has never been seen of heard from again.
Whoa, they said baby and not fetus? It's only a baby when they can charge someone for murder
Hey i am Leeannas aunt i just came across this web site been doing alot research since this happen to her . I am against them so bad now it is so unreal i work for teh pubic and i look at them diffenert now . Leeanna was on her way to my house went this wreck happen , i am still not over her and ever willl be cause i cnat have kids and she was like my own !!!!!!!Martinez was at a high rise prison here cause he cut off the ankle bracket he was wearing for almost biteing off a cops finger went he hit Leeanna , they have already had to move him cause the prisoners thier is threating him and his life i told them let them get him !!!!!!
