And you are no better than Waxman either, asserting a divine right to something that does not belong to you alone.

You just don't get it do you? You have smoked for 40 years every place you have gone. Don't you realized you have been imposing your preference to smoke on others who didn't want to? That's what all this non smoking stuff is about.THEN STAY AWAY FR0M SMOKERS! Simple as that. Then you won't have any cause to bitch about it!!

I am a 66 year old artist who doesn't drink, smoke, gamble, like porn or play scrabble. I have been avoiding smokers ever since I left home at age 17, that would be 1957, when EVERYONE smoked every where. I am NOT a government pawn no matter if you like to think I am. There are lots of us out here like me and you are on the losing end.Gosh, how wonderful to be so perfect!! You must be very proud of yourself!
We are on the losing END? I don't THINK so! Many of us all across the United States are fighting for the rights of the business owner and people like YOU!

I
'll ask this before somebody else does in a more antagonistic obnoxious way: You are 66 and have been exposed to SHS involuntarily for your entire life no matter how much you tried to avoid it. How are you still alive if SHS is as dangerous as Sarin Gas?Good gravy! 66 and still ALIVE???? Surely, she has been exposed to SHS in all those years and she is still ALIVE????? Goodness!

If tobacco is such a public health menace, why not just do away with it a la Leaded Gasoline?
Don't answer, because we both know it. The public sector should be scrapped and, maybe, restarted. I speak gingerly.

And I hope you many more postings. However, I smoked for 27 years and this past October have been quit for eight (just counted it up since 2/11's my B-day) and I know from experience smoking isn't good for anyone. Those who think otherwise are only successful in deceiving themselves.
PS. "Black Knight" is the Monty Python character who denies being hurt despite having lost both arms and legs.

Thanks for this info. You didn't say what happened in Maine. I'll google it. Gov. Culver says this new tax will bring in and extra $140 million a year and at the same time save lives.
To: SheLion
Don't get me wrong. I hate smoking. Even if it weren't dangerous, it's obnoxious. Still this tax is also wrong and they're selling the people of Iowa a bill of goods.
Since you're as passionate about it as you are, do you have sources for rolling your own, etc?
To: SheLion
I don't know what Waxman smells like. All I know is that he perfectly exemplifies the old line about politics being show business for ugly people.
To: SheLion
Are you finished?
LOL! You never disappoint!

You miss the point; 3/4 of all the deaths in a given year are the deaths of non-smokers, when did anybody make a fuss over that?
Since the percentage of mortality among smokers pretty much equals the percentage of smokers in the population who die, one might just as easily classify the number of people who eat garlic, or snowboard or wear red garters.
Now, if the percentage of smokers who die could be shown to be higher than those non-smokers who die, an argument would have merit. But no figures exist by which one could make that determination.
The argument for premature death assumes that each of us is alloted a certain number of years and, if we don't make it, something intervened to put us down.
The prologue to Albert Camus' The Plague has a tale of a man so morbidly fearful that he takes to his bed and hires a manservant to attend to his needs and for entertainment the frightened soul counts peas from a full bowl to an empty one then switches bowls and continues until sleep overtakes him.
That was meant, I think, to say that a life unlived, is no life at all.

Speaking of risk, how much do you drive in an average week? According to statistics I am likely to be safer driving in a car with second hand smoke than walking to work..
