I have just gotten word that Rep. Eddie Farnsworth who chairs the Arizona House Judiciary Committee has blocked or is blocking HB 2287 from being heard. Essentially, what HB 2287 will do is enable Arizona voters to vote for candidates for state office in order of their preference rather than by the 'winner-take-all' method used now.

Four municipalities (Davis & Oakland, California, Minneapolis, Minnesota and Pierce County, Washington) across the country have enacted ranked choice voting last November while 2 cities (San Francisco, California and Cambridge, Mass.) have been using it for sometime.

For a demonstration of how ranked choice voting works, visit the website: http://www.instantrunoff.com

If you want to read the actual bill, here is a link to the text of HB 2287:

Please e-mail Rep. Farnsworth and urge him to allow HB 2287 to come for a vote and pass on this message to as many like-minded people as possible. Please contact your representatives in the Arizona House (Republican or Democrat) and ask them to co-sponsor and support this important piece of legislation. If this bill is held up in Farnsworth's committee then HB 2287 is dead and may not be able to be reconsidered for the rest of the legislative session. A letter you can cut, paste and e-mail to him is provided below:

Subject: Allow HB 2287 to be heard

Dear Representative Farnsworth,

Please allow HB 2287 - Ranked Choice Voting - to be heard in the Judiciary Committee. This voting method will save the taxpayers time and money and would enable voters to rank candidates running for state office in order of their preference.

As an Arizona voter, I should be able to rank candidates running for state office in the order of my preference rather than vote my fears.

Thank you.

Regards, Name Address Telephone number
