For the past four years, Duf Sundheim has been walking a tightrope between the really, really conservative wing of the California Republican Party and the party's "still pretty conservative but we like to win an election occasionally" bloc. But with the end of his four-year term just a few days away, the party chairman made it clear this morning that his money is on the pragmatists.
--snip--
For people who don't spend a lot of time hanging around GOP activists, "broad coalition" is the code phrase for blacks, Latinos, moderate Republicans, decline-to-state voters and the occasional conservative Democrat.
Who, as Sundheim pointed out, are just the sort of folks who helped propel Arnold Schwarzenegger to his landslide victory in November.
The re-election win "shows that you can take the positions (Schwarzenegger) holds and be successful in California," he added.
Sundheim, who will leave his post this Sunday after the party convention in Sacramento, also complained that new campaign finance rules have made political parties too powerful and said that the parties, which he suggested promote the hyperpartisanship that dismays so many voters, are misusing that power.
"It should be the people we elect who make the decisions, not the parties," he said. "I'm tired of parties not being in touch with people."
While conservatives like state Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, and Assemblyman Chuck DeVore, R-Irvine, have launched all-out attacks against what they see as Schwarzenegger's ongoing swing to the left, Sundheim argued that the governor provides the best possible chance to expand the state GOP.
"With Arnold Schwarzenegger here for the next four years, it gives us a chance to redefine ourselves," he said. "We have a strong conservative voice in the Legislature, but we also represent a voice ... that's progressive on the environment."

So long, Duf!
Don't let the broad coalition hit ya in the arse on the way out. TWirP!
Demolite, say g'nite.
Pragmatic = Progressive = Socialist ,, jmo
The last few years did not have to see a further erosion of the CA GOP ... and a ramping up of debt and spending that is unprecedented in this state's history.
To those Republicans who stand united in the State Senate and Assembly, do not sucker for this Progressive plunge, it leads to only further madness like that we have witnessed the last 3 years, most notably the last year.
Hey, Duf, how do you define "success"? Record growth in spending? Tripling the debt? Our borrowing capacity locked up for decades? Continued deficit spending? More big government nanny-state programs? Global warming restrictions that hog-tie us economically and limit freedom for everyone? Socialist healthcare programs? More fascist public-private partnerships so that you and your buddies can rake in the bucks at the trough?
Door.... Arse.... WHACK!
Did you mean off it's Duf?
Or get off it's duf?
LOL.
I'd be happy with extinction. He and his buddies are a virus.
Anybody want to give an over-under on how long before good ol' Duf shows up on some Presidential Campaign staff? Bonus points for which one.
