HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Anna Nicole Smith, the former Playboy playmate whose bizarre life careened from marrying an octogenarian billionaire to the untimely death of her son, died Thursday after collapsing at a South Florida hotel, one of her lawyers said.
Smith, 39, collapsed and was unresponsive while staying at the Seminole Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino, said the attorney, Ron Rale. She was rushed to a hospital.
"She checked in Monday at 8 p.m. as a guest. She was due to check out tomorrow," said Danielle Giordaano, a spokeswoman for the hotel.
Smith had been a tabloid staple even before she became Playboy's playmate of the year in 1993. Readers were fascinated by her bombshell good looks, her marriage to an elderly billionaire and subsequent court fight over his estate, her weight fluctuations, and last year, the sudden death of her 20-year-old son, Daniel Smith.
A former topless dancer, she made her name squeezing into Guess jeans. She resembled the late actress Marilyn Monroe, a similarity played up in her Guess magazine ads, billboards and department store displays.
In 1994, she married 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, the head of oil-based Koch Industries, which is part of a family fortune worth at least $400 million.
He died in 1995, setting off a feud with her former stepson, E. Pierce Marshall, over whether she had a right to his estate.
A federal court in California awarded Smith $474 million in a complicated legal twist that began after she declared bankruptcy. That was later overturned.
But in May, the U.S. Supreme Court revived her case, ruling that she deserved another day in court in her battle with her former stepson.
The justices said only that federal courts in California could deal with her case despite a Texas state court ruling that Marshall was the sole heir to the estate.
Then, the stepson died June 20 at age 67. But the family said the court fight would continue.
Daniel Smith died Sept. 10 in his mother's hospital room in the Bahamas, just days after she gave birth to a daughter.
An American medical examiner hired by the family, Cyril Wecht, said he had methadone and two antidepressants in his system when he died. Low levels of the three drugs interacted to cause an accidental death, Wecht said.
Meanwhile, the paternity of her now 5-month-old daughter remained a matter of dispute.
She was born Vickie Lynn Hogan on Nov. 28, 1967, in Houston, one of six children of Donald Eugene and Virgie Hart Hogan.
She married Bill Smith in 1985, giving birth to Daniel before divorcing two years later.
I always like her too but I felt sorry for her, such a tragic life.
She seemed to be manipulated by those around her, I wondered if there was anyone, currently living, that really cared about her.
Apparently the lawyer was around for both deaths. This is starting to look like the last days of the Roman Empire.
You got that right! I am just surprised the infant is not dead.
ha...
Add her name to the long list of women who are used abused and discarded by the entertainment establishment.
Nah, I'm figuring accidental drug overdose.
I smell murder...to get Anna Nicole's money.
I think you are correct. The problem with ugliness is on the inside. We should be dealing with ideas, not appearances.
I have seen shots of Lady Macbeth Clinton where she was downright attractive (long ago). I am not against her looks but her ideas and methods. Likewise, Helen Thomas is not a newsperson but a plant for evil people.
I hope they build a shrine for A.N.S. in Mexia, Texas. I drove near there once. She started out frying chicken or working at a fried chicken place. Her life was sad. We all contribute to that, I believe. Celebrity kills.
I pray her child is safe
Rest in peace...
you mean Stern. is he in custody?
Justices gave new legal impetus to Smith's bid to collect millions of dollars from the estate of J. Howard Marshall II. Her late husband's estate has been estimated at as much as $1.6 billion.
Would NOT be intentional suicide, that's for sure...They (police/homocide) needs to do a THOROUGH background on this Howard Stern character. And put the baby girl in "protective custody" far away from him! Wasn't there to be a DNA test today? THAT's no coincidence EITHER

This portion of the article is darn near incoherent.
"She was due to check out tomorrow."
Looks like she checked out a day early.
Hey, it's a living.
In what universe?
Actually sounds like the TrimSpa product killed her. These diet drugs often cause dangerous heart damage.
Problem is, the baby was left in the Bahamas. I doubt that US law can reach her there. Which makes all my bells and whistles go off.
Besides the photographer who claims to be the baby's father (and may well be, because she LOOKS LIKE him), there are TWO other claimants. One is her lawyer Howard K. Stern, which we all know about. The baby does not resemble him in any way.
The other surfaced just last night on Entertainment Tonight. Two middle aged (maybe 55 - 60 yrs old) FL men were interviewed in the Bahamas. One claimed to be the baby's father. One (perhaps the same one) owns the house that Anna Nicole rented in the Bahamas. In the interview, the owner of the house said he was evicting Anna Nicole because the house was being used for unspecified stuff he didn't approve of. Could have been lousy housekeeping, might have been bodies turning up in the pool. The fellow who claimed to be the baby's father had the right coloring and features, and he claimed to have been intimate with Anna Nicole, which also sounds right, because she was apparently very promiscuous. Maybe she got a deal on the house because she slept with him.
Details, details. The ugly puzzle I'm piecing together is Anna Nicole surrounded by three men who were much smarter than she was, saying they were taking care of her interests, but really only taking care of their own. Anyone close to her could see how at risk she was of dying from drugs or alcohol on purpose or accidentally. Were the two middle aged guys in cahoots with Howard K Stern? Did they plan to get Anna Nicole out of the Bahamas so she could fulfill her threats to commit suicide (which she might have been making...I recall seeing her on gossip tv recently saying she could just end it all.) By leaving the baby in the Bahamas, they've effectively removed her from US jurisdiction, I think.
Well, so much for my fertile imagination. Perhaps Anna Nicole was an avalanche on a path of self-destruction no one could have prevented. Maybe the people around her sincerely wanted to help. But this sleazy FL fellow claiming paternity just last night on tv makes me very suspicious that something nefariou is up. Or maybe it was just the last straw for Anna Nicole Smith who knowingly and willingly took a lethal dose of pills. But wasn't that predictable too?
Who in J. Howard Marshall's family benefits from her death?
