Anna Nicole Smith collapses, dies at 39

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. - Anna Nicole Smith, the former Playboy playmate whose bizarre life careened from marrying an octogenarian billionaire to the untimely death of her son, died Thursday after collapsing at a South Florida hotel, one of her lawyers said.

Smith, 39, collapsed and was unresponsive while staying at the Seminole Hard Rock Cafe Hotel and Casino, said the attorney, Ron Rale. She was rushed to a hospital.

"She checked in Monday at 8 p.m. as a guest. She was due to check out tomorrow," said Danielle Giordaano, a spokeswoman for the hotel.

Smith had been a tabloid staple even before she became Playboy's playmate of the year in 1993. Readers were fascinated by her bombshell good looks, her marriage to an elderly billionaire and subsequent court fight over his estate, her weight fluctuations, and last year, the sudden death of her 20-year-old son, Daniel Smith.

A former topless dancer, she made her name squeezing into Guess jeans. She resembled the late actress Marilyn Monroe, a similarity played up in her Guess magazine ads, billboards and department store displays.

In 1994, she married 89-year-old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall II, the head of oil-based Koch Industries, which is part of a family fortune worth at least $400 million.

He died in 1995, setting off a feud with her former stepson, E. Pierce Marshall, over whether she had a right to his estate.

A federal court in California awarded Smith $474 million in a complicated legal twist that began after she declared bankruptcy. That was later overturned.

But in May, the U.S. Supreme Court revived her case, ruling that she deserved another day in court in her battle with her former stepson.

The justices said only that federal courts in California could deal with her case despite a Texas state court ruling that Marshall was the sole heir to the estate.

Then, the stepson died June 20 at age 67. But the family said the court fight would continue.

Daniel Smith died Sept. 10 in his mother's hospital room in the Bahamas, just days after she gave birth to a daughter.

An American medical examiner hired by the family, Cyril Wecht, said he had methadone and two antidepressants in his system when he died. Low levels of the three drugs interacted to cause an accidental death, Wecht said.

Meanwhile, the paternity of her now 5-month-old daughter remained a matter of dispute.

She was born Vickie Lynn Hogan on Nov. 28, 1967, in Houston, one of six children of Donald Eugene and Virgie Hart Hogan.

She married Bill Smith in 1985, giving birth to Daniel before divorcing two years later.

" The "Happy Birthday Mr. President" moment wasn't sexy, it was a forced, stilted, caricature of sexiness."

Every time I see that clip, I can't believe it ever was allowed to see the light of day, and I remember it being played on television at the time. Poor Marilyn was so impaired she could hardly stand up and get the words out. And her dress was skin tight and translucent if not exactly transparent. Her "performance" was pathetic and embarrassing, yet such was the power of the media idolatry of anything related to the Kennedys, it was presented as if it was a knockout celebrity "event". It gives me the willies when I see it.

"Forgettable? That's your review? Remarkable since it was never completed and nobody saw it. Kind of taints the rest of your post. (btw...anyone can cut and paste from imdb)"

My error. Now all you Marilyn fans, provide me with legit Critic reviews that gave her raves for talent. She was at best mediocre. You are certainly allowed your views but I hardly think it is universally accepted.

BTW, my taking the list from IMDB (Attributed properly) was merely to list her works. Not to impress anyone. That is why I gave attribution.

"Actually I would think Anna looked more like Jayne Mansfield." I agree.

She appeared to love her son very much.

Course none of us really know what makes these celeb types tick, but even though she loved her children she set a very poor example for them. Not only them but many others.
I kinda believe that guy fighting to see his child seems nice. Maybe it will be better for the child.

Still sad to see such a wasted life end so young.

A person who's known her for yrs said she most probably died from a drug overdose. She wanted to be a Marilyn Monroe and Jane Mansfield...she got her wish...early death. Lots of stress on a body....lots of drugs...on top of that the tragic death of her son.

I think it's very very sad...prayers for her family. At least now hopefully, she's with her beloved son again and at peace.

Per a 5 pm news report, she had flu-like symptoms the last couple days, had a fever last night..

She was in Florida since Monday shopping for a boat and was returning to Bahamas tomorrow.

Putting on my flame suit, the only thing that makes sense to me is the timing.
ANS' daughter's father was ANS's son. The son freaked out when he found he was the dad and could not handle it and checked out.
ANS knew that the truth would come out with the court ordered DNA test this week, so she checked out.

Too much Law and Order is my defense.

Re: "Something's Got To Give"

This was the film Monroe was working on when she died. It was the film from which she had been fired from until Dean Martin said he would walk if she didn't return. She was obviously one messed-up 36-year-old by that point and was constantly late on the set or refused to work. But, even then, there was still a certain magic to her screen performances.

American Movie Classics got the prints of the film in one of their vault purchases and released about a 50-minute version of the scenes that had been shot along with a documentary about the movie that never came out.

Monroe and Smith both symbolize to me women who craved love in the traditional sense but found they were unable/incapable of sustaining a relationship with anyone for whatever reason, probably in part to bad/absent parenting. Their "revenge" was to make themselves into outrageous "bombshells" to get the attention they wanted so badly and yet lacked the personal skills to sustain.

Women who turn themselves into sex objects for attention have a difficult transition when there is nothing to fall back on once the looks go. When the money is spent and the men no longer desire them, they often descend into a deep depression. I suspect this was ANS's situation.

BTW, I have to insert one of my favorite Marilyn Monroe stories. Soon after she married Joe DiMaggio, the baseball star, she did USO tours in Korea for adoring troops. When she came back, she tried to explain to DiMaggio the thrill she got performing to the crowd.

"You have no idea what it feels like to have thousands of men practically worship you," said Monroe.

Responded DiMaggio dryly, "Oh, I think I can."

It just seems to me to odd. They died in the perfect odd for the daughter to inherit.

First the son in law dies suddenly, leaving ANS in a much stronger standing in the inheritance dispute. Next her son dies, most likely her heir. Now she dies, leaving to either her husband (if there is one) or her child. I would look at HJS or the photog if he gets the child.

Ok, I watch way too much Hercule.

I hope somebody is checking closely for odd death possibilities. I don't know what they look for, but I know it's peculiar both the son and now the mother die so suddenly of "heart" problems. This Stern guy might be another black widow. The baby would inherit her mom's money. There is gonna be a court battle that makes the other one (with the stepson and supreme court) look mild. All IMO, of course.

Praying for that baby. Sheesh, what a life... for a six month old!

"Interesting....looks like this guy Stern may have a hand in all of this."

I don't think he killed her, but if she overdosed, I think he's responsible. Over the years, from her TV series to interviews, he's always with her. She appears wacked out on drugs or alcohol...could barely utter a complete sentence, and he appears completely sober.

If he really loved her, she would have been been in rehab, getting help, or he should have limited the amount of drugs she took.

I think she committed suicide.

She loved herself too much for suicide, but I think her grief could have made her get sloppy with her own drug use, IF a drug overdose is found to be her cause of death.
