Why then has President Bush (for instance) so steadfastly supported Uribe against the Columbian drug runner/terrorists of FARC?

Your statement is an insult to a man who has stood up for what he believes best for this nation when it was popular to do so and now when it is not.

Should these men be imprisoned where they can be protected, or perhaps not even imprisoned at all? Of course. However, President Bush's approach has been as governor and president has been to leave these issues to the Justice Department, rather than assume he can pick and choose where said department goes wrong. In this way, he has avoided the danger of becoming a President Clinton, drunk with his power to intercede in the judicial process--- that's the benefit of President Bush's approach . As this case shows, there are costs as well to it, as there are to all approaches to any issue a president may take on any issue of consequence.
