Rep. Ridicules Gov't Policy Toward Gays (shows how Dems really feel about national security)

(AP) A New York congressman on Wednesday jokingly suggested the Bush administration may fear a "platoon of lesbians" more than terrorists in Baghdad, given the military's resistance to letting homosexuals openly serve.
Rep. Gary Ackerman's criticism of Pentagon policy came as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice testified before the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
Ackerman, a New York City Democrat, complained to Rice that the military had fired Arabic and Farsi translators after learning the translators were homosexuals.
"For some reason, the military seems more afraid of gay people than they are against terrorists. They're very brave with the terrorists, and if the terrorists ever got ahold of this information, they get a platoon of lesbians to chase us out of Baghdad," said Ackerman, prompting laughter in the hearing room.

Ackerman suggested the State Department could hire dozens of outed and ousted former military translators.
"Can we marry up these two or maybe that's not the right word. ... Can we have some kind of union of those two issues?" Ackerman asked, prompting a fresh outburst of laughter.
Rice, in diplomatic fashion, played it cool.
"Congressman, I'm not aware of the availability of people, but I will certainly look," she said, adding that her department has quadrupled the number of employees in critical languages.

Boy, oh boy. Our nation is in a state of national insecurity and at war and guess what the Dems are thinking about? Trying to force the military to hire a bunch of fruitcakes! These people have almost no sense of decency or perception of any kind. Interestingly enough, even Jim Webb, though I dislike him intensely, opposes letting gays serve openly.

Mr. Webb does seem to be quite a jerk, at least from some of the FR articles about him posted--such as his rude behavior to President Bush when asked about his son (a soldier).

>>Ackerman suggested the State Department could hire dozens of outed and ousted former military translators.<<
Its been a long time since I was involved in research where qualifications for security clearances came up... but 15-20 years ago it wasn't whether you were gay or had used drugs or had an affair - it was whether you were keeping it secret and thus it could be used against you.
Nobody could threaten Barney Frank with revealing his sexual orientation because he's open about it. But somebody working at state secretly being gay is a potential risk.
In the olden times if you disclosed a secret to to the people doing the background check then they might require you to tell you wife and your mother and employer (or whoever you were afraid to tell) as a condition of getting clearance.
I don't know whether the rules are the same now, but if they are it would make sense to fire someone who hid a big secret that made them vulnerable to blackmail
BTW, this is one problem with "Don't ask don't tell" - its a recipe for blackmail.

What this Congressman is doing is showing what a total dolt he is. Our country is at war and he's focused on this.

Another loon from the police state called New York City. No wonder both parties hold the New York delegations at arms' length.

Letting gays into the military would be a disaster! The dumbing down or morals and the changing of the meaning of "morals", has hurt the military enough! Abu Gar ab anyone?

Not to mention the pilot who posed for Playboy, and "can't understand why it is a problem". Discipline is essential in the military!
