Shackled together at the wrist, the two brothers awaited their fate at the lonely jail in Donga Bonga, a cotton-farming backwater near Pakistan's sealed border with India.
They were poor men, barefoot farm labourers with pinched cheeks and calloused hands. But when they spoke, their bloodshot eyes flashed with cold steel.
Four days earlier Muhammad Aslam, 35, and Maqbool Ahmed, 40, had killed their younger sister and her lover. It was a crude, gruesome death: the pair were battered with a brick and strangled with an old rope. But the killers expressed not an ounce of remorse.
"We feel no shame. They had been warned," said Aslam, a slightly built father of eight. "We did it for honour," said Ahmed defiantly. "In our society a man without honour is nothing."
A man's pride exacts a high price in hidebound rural Pakistan. Almost every day a woman is beaten, clubbed or shot to death for what is euphemistically termed "adultery" - sex outside marriage. In most cases the killer is a father, brother or uncle.
"There's an increased brutalisation of society," said Kamila Hyat of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, which recorded about 300 so-called honour killings in 2006 - about the same number as the previous year.

And I don't see this as "justice." I see it as an artifact of tribal customs, something this woman and her lowlife "lover" knew well. They knew what they were risking -- they had been TOLD what would happen if the affair continued.
And Lothario was not exactly a choir boy. He was nothing but a tinhorn crook. I see this as two brothers from a primitive tribal village doing what the rest of the villagers didn't have the stomach for.
It's savage, brutal, and about as civilized as a stone axe. What it is NOT is "justice," nor did I ever claim it was. I don't care if they hang Bonga One and Two from the highest banyan in Punjab.
HAHAHAHA! This just keeps getting crazier ...
Dude, judge not cigarette smokers lest you be judged. Unbelievable. Do you have sisters? I hope you dont't have daughters.
Stranger than fiction.
Same case, different spin.
How multicultural of you.
Of course not, but murder isn't the answer, at least not here. Seems to be the tradition over there.
No. But if I did, I would hope I would not sit by and let them be used by some gutter trash. I owe my family more than that. So would she.
I hope you dont't have daughters.
See above.
I'm suprrised she left her husband, and that he didn't leave her or he kill her first. (No offense if the husband is a good guy...) We have no idea what that woman's marriage was like.
I DO NOT condone adultery in any circumstances, but the oppression women live in in those villages is often unbearable.
Stone-age mentality.
Can't find it. But I did find out that it is a movie and here is a little girl singing Donga Donga, lol.
They do the crime and their sister pays the price. What kind of thinking is this?
I'm sorry, did you think that Donga Bonga was covered under the Bill of Rights? Did we export habeus corpus to Borneo? As far as I'm concerned, this was basically a family matter. The Bonga Headbangers have admitted their acts and are not whining about the consequences. It's obvious to me that the nobler of these parties were the perps, and the matter never should have gotten beyond the village limits.
And running to the arms of the local goombah was somehow going to improve her lot in life??? Come on, dude! You can't be serious!
They were beaten by 2 of their brothers. What a lovely way to go.
How much crazier can it get. Two Forty plus year old adults (probably late middle aged for Pakistan) are dragged out of their house and beaten to death for cohabitation. You called him oversexed and her a whore. Hundreds of these killings happen every year. Do you suppose they were unaware of that fact? Star crossed lovers - perhaps.
"Come and listen to a story about a man named Ahmed/Found his wife cheating and clubbed her 'till she was dead/Now he's a hero to his community/Because he's an "Honorable" Pakistani."
Kill then, but only after slowly separating them from their manhood.
