HANNITY: Let me move on. And the issue of guns has come up a lot. When people talk about Mayor Giuliani, New York City had some of the toughest gun laws in the entire country. Do you support the right of people to carry handguns?
GIULIANI: I understand the Second Amendment. I support it. People have the right to bear arms. When I was mayor of New York, I took over at a very, very difficult time. We were averaging about 2,000 murders a year, 10,000...
HANNITY: You inherited those laws, the gun laws in New York?
GIULIANI: Yes, and I used them. I used them to help bring down homicide. We reduced homicide, I think, by 65-70 percent. And some of it was by taking guns out of the streets of New York City.
So if you're talking about a city like New York, a densely populated area like New York, I think it's appropriate. You might have different laws other places, and maybe a lot of this gets resolved based on different states, different communities making decisions. After all, we do have a federal system of government in which you have the ability to accomplish that.
HANNITY: So you would support the state's rights to choose on specific gun laws?
GIULIANI: Yes, I mean, a place like New York that is densely populated, or maybe a place that is experiencing a serious crime problem, like a few cities are now, kind of coming back, thank goodness not New York, but some other cities, maybe you have one solution there and in another place, more rural, more suburban, other issues, you have a different set of rules.
HANNITY: But generally speaking, do you think it's acceptable if citizens have the right to carry a handgun?
GIULIANI: It's not only -- I mean, it's part of the Constitution. People have the right to bear arms. Then the restrictions of it have to be reasonable and sensible. You can't just remove that right. You've got to regulate, consistent with the Second Amendment.
HANNITY: How do you feel about the Brady bill and assault ban?
GIULIANI: I was in favor of that as part of the crime bill. I was in favor of it because I thought that it was necessary both to get the crime bill passed and also necessary with the 2,000 murders or so that we were looking at, 1,800, 1,900, to 2,000 murders, that I could use that in a tactical way to reduce crime. And I did.
Because PA Dems got smart enough to run a pro-lifer and Santorum got dumb enough to forget he represented what used to be a very blue-collar state.
And that is a very important lesson for 2008. Being pro-life when the Dems are pro-choice won Santorum a Senate seat twice. It's foolish for the GOP to give up that normal advantage over the Dems.
That, my FRiend, is a Classic!
"It's just a flesh wound!"
I said damned near the same thing myself yesterday. It might split off into republican and conservative camps.
Man you're not kidding. When he had Ann Coulter on, she started to talk about Duncan Hunter, and Hannity cut her off and demanded she talking about Giuliani or McCain or Romney.
Once again, explain why that's at all relevant. Let me lay it out for you: Suppose 59 Senators and the President want an anti-gun bill. 41 Senators do not want the bill. Those 41 Senators can defeat any vote for cloture under Rule 22, and therefore prevent the Senate from voting on the bill. Get it?
You are a complete blowhard.
And you think that insults are political discourse.
I agree entirely.
Since Rudy has actively promoted gun control laws, that is why he should not be the GOP nominee.
Thanks for making my point for me better than I was making it myself.
Justices Scalia, Thomas, Alito, and Roberts are buttholes?
LOL
Sound similar to legislation every president, including Reagan have signed. I know it gets more and more limiting, but let's not pretend that things are going to change drastically if Rudy attains the presidency.
Amazing.
Gawd, you are thick.
The president decides whether it takes a simple majority (or a 60 percent majority) to pass a bill, or whether it will take a 67 percent majority.
Agree with your assessment that he won't win. This entire thread is about something that won't come to pass ala Rudy...or any Republican. Hillery is the one to fear, and I think she's a lock for 08 regardless of who runs on either side.
We just lost the State PA because some were in a snit over some BS reason
Personally I hope they choke on it
In your case, that is not an insult, but an accurate accessment.
Anyone who believes Casey, Jr is a pro-lifer .. is dumber then a box of rocks
How does this differ in practical terms from #2? Tell me, under your regime, if an American attempts to order 100 fully-automatic rifles and an RPG, would this be legal or illegal? Would you require the seller to ask, "Are you a responsible citizen or a terrorist" and refuse sales to anyone who answered the latter?
Well, Pennsylvania is a lot like Michigan... over run with working class drones marching to the UAW party line. After seeing Granholm re-elected here, I don't think Michigan will ever be a red state again.
