Despite his personal fortune and impressive lineage, Arthur Sulzberger, owner, chairman and publisher of the most respected newspaper in the world, is a stressed man.
Why would the man behind the New York Times be stressed? Well, profits from the paper have been declining for four years, and the Times company's market cap has been shrinking, too. Its share lags far behind the benchmark, and just last week, the group Sulzberger leads admitted suffering a $570 million loss because of write offs and losses at the Boston Globe.
As if that weren't enough, his personal bank, Morgan Stanley, recently set out on a campaign that could cost the man control over the paper.
All this may explain why Sulzberger does not talk with the press.
But perhaps the rarified alpine air at the World Economic Forum at Davos, Switzerland, which ended last week, relaxes the CEOs of the world's leading companies. And what began as a casual chat ended in a fascinating glimpse into Sulzberger's world, and how he sees the future of the news business.

"Most respected newspaper in the world?" -- Who says?
Shut it down now, Save the Trees!!!!
An overinflated sense of self-worth if you ask me.......
How delightfully ironic!
4 outta 5 birds say it's the best cage liner made
Why would anyone be interested in his vision of the new world? This is a guy who hasn't responded to market demands at all, resulting in the imminent collapse of his flagship product. Asking Pinch for advice about the news biz is like asking Wrong Way Corrigan for directions.
I wonder how many subscribers the NYT gets for its on-line Select Service? Can't be very many.... The only reason I ever buy the hardcopy edition is for the crossword. The left-wing slant and PC garbages permeates even the sports section. Selena Roberts and William Rhoden? Ugh!
From Walter Duranty to Jayson Blair to Howell Raines, what have they ever done to deserve that title?
I'll second that. I can't wait until the NYT goes broke and is thrown in the dustbin of history.
death watch ping!
I read the Sunday Times in order to understand how life is lived in a moral sewer. Someone once told me that in 1954 they saw some an article in the Times with an accurate report of some event. I find that hard to believe.
DSM-IV 301.81 Narcissistic Personality Disorder
Symptoms
The symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder revolve around a pattern of grandiosity, need for admiration, and sense of entitlement. Often individuals feel overly important and will exaggerate achievements and will accept, and often demand, praise and admiration despite worthy achievements. They may be overwhelmed with fantasies involving unlimited success, power, love, or beauty and feel that they can only be understood by others who are, like them, superior in some aspect of life.
There is a sense of entitlement, of being more deserving than others based solely on their superiority. These symptoms, however, are a result of an underlying sense of inferiority and are often seen as overcompensation. Because of this, they are often envious and even angry of others who have more, receive more respect or attention, or otherwise steal away the spotlight.
Just one of many psychological diagnoses you could make about the Old Gray Whore.
Yay! No more New York Times!! YAY!!!
Oh... wait... now what will we use for toilet paper??
I used the Sunday Times to line my bird cage. After a couple of months my cat ate the bird after sharing an apartment with him for several years. I asked my cat why he ate the bird and he said "because he became a threat to society".
In which the Democrat Party Times turns Marshall McLuhan on his head, by implying that it is the newsprint MEDIUM and not their anti-American leftist MESSAGE that is the problem.
My attack parakeet votes for the Atlanta Journal & Constipation for cage liner.
