KANSAS CITY, Mo. A series of explosions has rocked the east bottoms area of Kansas City.
The explosion happened just after 2 p.m. in the area of Nicholson Avenue and Gardner. Firefighters are on scene at the Chem Central with hazardous materials crews.
Watch live coverage from NBC Action News.
Emergency crews have evacuated the area. Some residents and business in the area have experienced short power disruptions.
Do you (or anyone) know if they've mentioned what's in those railcars? The fire looks to be getting close to them. Are they empty?
Alfa, this anywhere close to where you work?
No. Those cars are a concern. Haven't heard what's in them.
I miss all the action! Traffic was okay for me, but then I'm going against the worst traffic flow. Didn't even see the smoke coming home.
Glad you made it home safely!! OB called and said downtown was pure gridlock, he was on I-70 moving one car length ahead at a time :-)
Looks like the smoke clouds/plumes are falling apart and will be affecting fewer neighborhoods.
Eek! Town!!
All I saw driving home was gray clouds...but then I was mostly watching traffic.
I hoarded beer when I heard of all the hops burning in Washington. But something happened to my stash!
well, it wasn't until we started getting telephone calls about it, we 'prairie dogged' out of our cubes and wandered over to the windows; have to admit it was 'vey' impressive.
My hubby made it home just fine, too. He already has a back way and said there was very little traffic. He actually got home in time for us to eat dinner before 6PM. It was kind of nice! LOL! He drove right by the plant (well, as close as was possible) and called to tell me how black the smoke was up close. ;o)

Just heard that according to the fire department, the tankers are filled with Petroleum Distillates.
Good! I'm glad you missed it!
I'm having a liverwurst sandwich (which is as close to liver pudding as I can get) and a glass of cholesterol medicine in your honor!
"I live to serve.
I, otoh, serve to live and live to eat. :)
I go north on hwy 69 on the way hmoe. I'm kinda dissappointed that I didn't see the cloud.
I'm watching, waiting for the tanker trucks to blow.

Yeah, TV Lady. Throw water on a chemical fire.

The only thing they're naming is mineral spirits.
I've got more Brunswick stew to finish off. I halved the recipe and I've still got lots of leftovers.
Have the officials assured us that this isn't terrorist related yet?
The tanker in the middle is steaming. My bet's on that one blowing first.
Yeah, I've been watching that one too.
My first thought when they said "chemical" was of you. Then I saw it wasn't your company.
