CAIRO, Egypt - The U.S. military said Wednesday a CH-46 Sea Knight helicopter went down about 20 miles northwest of Baghdad, while an Iraqi air force officer said it was downed by an anti-aircraft missile.
Al-Qaida-linked Sunni insurgents claimed responsibility for the alleged attack.
The claim was issued in an Internet statement signed by the Islamic State in Iraq, an umbrella group of several Sunni insurgent groups, including al-Qaida in Iraq. The authenticity of the statement -- posted on a Web forum where the group often issues statements -- could not be independently confirmed.

Or Russian-made SA-14 & SA-18 or Chicom copies of such. I'm sure both the Russian and Chicom arms makers have made sure their latest MANPADs, ATGWs, and tandem-warhead RPGs (such as the RPG-29) are making it to the Iraqi and Lebanese battlefields to see their effectiveness against Western combat systems.
There is still the possibility of mechanical failure, considering the age of the Sea Knight that was lost, but the reports by other pilots that witnessed it go down is more consistant with a SAM or RPG hit.

I care. This belongs in breaking news. It is sickening and heartbreaking to needlessly lose our finest this way. We are smarter than this. I support our troops but, yeah, I get squeamish asking them to be targets for terrorists. We can do better than this.

These are breaking news stories for a good reason. The announcement of the "surge" marked a turn of events, and we immediately saw changes in the jihadist M.O. in theater.
There is a LOT of money behind the terrorists... they seem to have an endless supply of it and guys who have nothing else to do.
