Asking U.S. to pull out of agreement gets OK [Security and Prosperity Partnership]

The House on Tuesday approved a resolution urging the United States to pull out of a cooperative economic, security and public health agreement with Mexico and Canada.

Rep. Stephen Sandstrom, R-Orem, said he is sponsoring HJR7 because he sees the Security and Prosperity Partnership as potentially, "wiping away our borders and becoming a common nation with a common currency" similar to the European Union.

Before Tuesday's 47-24 vote, Rep. Scott Wyatt, R-Logan, questioned what the so-called SPP really entails. He pointed to the government's Web site, spp.gov, which describes the partnership as a "dialogue" and not a signed agreement.

"I don't know what I'm asking ... because I don't know what it is," Wyatt said.

The partnership was announced in March 2005, by President Bush and the presidents of Canada and Mexico, who all said, "we must develop new avenues of cooperation that will make our open societies safer and more secure, our businesses more competitive, and our economies more resilient."

Before the vote, Rep. Sheryl Allen, R-Bountiful, had unsuccessfully sought to substitute the resolution with one that would urge an evaluation of the SPP by Congress, and request Utah's congressional delegation report to the state on the findings.

Allen said the partnership is broader than trade and should be studied further so the Legislature can better understand the scope of the issue.

"Its goals related to protection of our public health are very important," she said. "The SPP significantly has improved the cooperation between these countries in preparation for avian and pandemic influenza. ... We won't have energy security without cooperation."

Sandstrom later said issues such as avian flu can be addressed without "an agreement that could potentially merge our economies."

HJR7 now moves to the Senate.

The joint resolution addresses concerns of the SPP lacking congressional oversight and a highway planned for north-south travel from Texas.

The bill also expresses the concern of legislators that, "state and local governments throughout the United States would be negatively impacted by the SPP and North American Union process, such as the "open borders" vision of the SPP."

So if an epidemic breaks out in Mexico City, we won't close our borders (heaven forbid we interfere with the failure, NAFTA). We must even the playing field and give everyone a chance at the pandemic. Sarcasm/ Oh, the stupidity of the free traders.

We must cooperate Mexico has oil, Mexico has oil, Mexico has oil, and we don't have huevos.

Please direct me to the section of NAFTA that prevents the U.S. from closing the border in case of an epidemic. Thanks in advance.

Read the SPP and you will find that the border will NOT be closed due to an epidemic.

Look it up yourself. Thanks in advance.

Good lnk.

"The SPP builds upon, but is separate from, our long-standing trade and economic relationships," says a statement on the SPP Web site.

This reminds me of Clinton and the word "is". Of course, Clinton is a free trader.

Nowhere in the article or in the thread is it stated that this is a meaningless action by the Utah Legislature.

A road running north-south in Texas is, frankly, not an issue for the legislature of Utah.

There has been a lot of work on border security resulting in the implementation of the requirement for passports. I know that there are many who look not for progress and will only be satisfied by perfection, but since perfection is rarely achieved, I think they make the perfect the enemy of the good, and that is discouraging for those toiling in the vinyards of life.

We are facing western leg of the Canamex corridor in our area of Arizona.

A power plant is to be built across the border in Mexico by an LLC. Ugly huge power towers are to run across the Kofa Wildlife Refuge and not benefit our area in any way. They will sell power into the power grid that will go elsewhere.

A UP train from Punta Colonet on Baja, a huge seaport to rival Long Beach, (and bypass American labor unions)is seeking options for easements across ag land.

A highway is planned to connect Mexico and our area that will transport some of those millions and millions of ship containers from China, too.

There is also a natural gas line from Baja planned by a Canadian firm. Ships are being build in Austrailia, Indonesia and I think it was Russia to carry the liquified gas....according to the Canadian making the presentation.

And now the buzz word is transparency....A day late and a dollar short! Transparency = smoke and mirrors

Changing to 'deep stealth' mode.

This shouldn't have any effect on the Texas Corridor nor the Mexican Customs ort of Entry in Kansas City.

Yes, because California refuses to license an LNG plant on its coast.

Sure, they need the natural gas. So, how else are they going to get it?

Once again, you've lived up to your screen name. What happened today? Run out of reasons why those BP agents should remain in jail?

The only people that use the term "corporatist" are long-haired, dope-smoking, hippie types. You should be embarassed that you are oblivious to it. Google "corporatist+ralph+nader."

As someone pointed out on one of those Ramos/Compean threads that makes you go white-knuckled, it's sad that people who agree with each other can't police themselves for the silly comments they make. One would think that you'd understand that it hurts your cause (e.g., the SPP will make us all die of bird flu).
