One of two Border Patrol agents sentenced to a decade in federal prison for the shooting of a Mexican drug smuggler in Texas was beaten by five fellow inmates at a medium-security prison in Yazoo City, Miss., lawmakers and his relatives said Tuesday.
The inmates surrounded Ignacio Ramos on Saturday night and punched him and kicked him with their work boots, said his father-in-law, Joe Loya of El Paso. Relatives learned of the attack Monday when they reached Ramos by phone on his 38th birthday, Loya said.
Rep. Walter Jones, R-N.C., one of a group of lawmakers seeking presidential pardons for Ramos and fellow agent Jose Compean, said prison officials confirmed the assault and were investigating, according to Jones' office.
The U.S. Bureau of Prisons declined comment. Prison officials told Jones' office that a doctor examined Ramos, who had bruises and abrasions.
Reports of the incident circulated on the Internet and accelerated grassroots efforts that were under way on behalf of the agents. Ramos' and Compean's supporters contend that overzealous prosecutors victimized them, but federal authorities say the two abused their authority and were properly sentenced.
An El Paso jury convicted them in a shooting Feb. 17, 2005, involving Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, who was trying to flee back into Mexico after abandoning a van near Fabens that contained 743 pounds of marijuana.
The agents fired 15 shots at Aldrete-Davila, hitting him once in the buttocks as he escaped into Mexico.
An investigation found that the agents tried to dispose of shell casings and filed a false report. They told authorities that they'd thought Aldrete-Davila was armed.
Loya, in a telephone interview, said Ramos had told his family that a group of inmates surrounded his bedside in the dormitorylike facility where they were being held and kicked him in the head, face and mouth. The attack occurred after inmates watched an episode of America's Most Wanted that featured the shooting case, Loya said.
Ramos identified only one of his assailants but thought that the group included illegal immigrants who were serving sentences for drug trafficking and other offenses, Loya said.
"They were able to identify him," he said. "A bunch of them just ganged up on him while he was sleeping."
After the attack, Loya said, an inmate took Ramos to security guards. He was placed in isolation, away from the other prisoners, Loya said.
Loya said on H&C last night that Ramos was in isolation for two days before he got medical attention.
BUMP!
Disgusting beyond comment.
"Even the illegals in jail are sending the message, just as the illegals on our streets. Wait till the numbers are in their favor, just as they were in the beating of a law enforcement official. Get armed and get ready, for it will not be long".
...I am for sending every damn one of these illegals back home, fining the daylights out businesses that hire them, and deny illegals medical. But to say that we will all get a physical beating is a little over the top, don't you think?
"The attack occurred after inmates watched an episode of America's Most Wanted that featured the shooting case, Loya said".
...I had read yesterday on "Grassfire" how these guys were being questioned by inmates on what they were in for. I guess they could only dodge the inevitable for so long.
No! All I am saying is; become armed and get prepared. As soon as shamnasty is done, the likelihood of citizens being beaten, robbed, raped, and tortured, and killed on the streets increases dramatically. Doubt me at your own risk!
Imprisoned border agent did report shooting
The April 12, 2005, DHS memo stated that all the agents present at the incident were equally guilty for not filing a written report.
How can a report that isn't filed be filed falsely?
Lotsa Mexicans in my neighborhood. I have bars on all doors and windows. They say it's not safe in case of fire, but I sleep a lot better at night knowing they'd have to come through them. That will give me time to get the 9mm loaded and locked. (It's already loaded and handy.)
I learned yesterday that field agents don't file reports. The supervisors do.
If our "courageous" President had any guts and wasn't in bed with the MEXICAN POLITICOS these abandoned Border Patrol protectors of our Borders would never have reach this plain of gutlessness the President exibited so readily so as not to anger the trash he is listening to instead of his Oath Of Office these guys would be home with their families as Bush is every night.
Shame on you Mr. President, how do you sleep at night after allowing these two Americans and their families to suffer so you can look good to your MEXICAN AMIGOS?
I'm just appalled. Not surprised, mind you. But someone should have the warden's a$$ in a sling over this. When the subject of prison reform comes up [never] the hot topic should be how prisoners are not safe from one another.
Jeffrey Dahmer.

...I understand what you're saying and couldn't agree more.
Since these two Border guys are in prison ,it is my understanding they are under the protection of the Federal Govt.
Therefor if the Govt. can not protect them, from whoever wants to beat them up or Kill them, then these two men should be released on their own recognizance.
The warden should be fired with no pension, and lawyers for these men should file law suits against the fed Govt. in the range of $10,000,000.00 .
Any prisoners attacking others in prison should be Shot. on sight.
Disn't Sutton say " that these agents filed false reports"?
Looks like it to me.
Sutton, meet petard.
