Martha, make these slackers suffer for their art
Boston Herald ^ | 2/7/07 | Howie Carr

Attorney General Martha Coakley, I implore you: Don’t plea-bargain with the Turner terror tots.

Whatever you want to call them - Beavis and Butthead, Cheech and Chong - these two knuckleheads deserve jail time. You already shook down Time Warner for $2 million, which was a good start. But to finish the job, you have to lock up these two freelance (read: unemployed) “performance artists,” if only for a month.

I’m not encouraged by the fact that sources say you’ve been sitting on the smoking gun since Friday. I’d hate to see you pull a Tom Reilly and broom this case. Now we find out that Peter Berdovsky, aka Borat, and his pal Sean Stevens were out videotaping the first responders’ handling of the initial “suspicious bomb,” as Mumbles puts it, at Sullivan Square in Charlestown.

According to the sources, they never bothered to alert anyone to the hoax. They were in effect just goofing on the cops, recording it all for posterity, or at least YouTube.

But now it turns out the cops have surveillance photos of the dysfunctional duo taping the public safety crews. They’re busted, in much the same way that the cops get videotape - after a fire - of the aronist showing up to check his handiwork.

The only difference between these bums and guys like Frankie Flame is that the latter called themselves torches, not “performance artists.”

This column will set off a new onslaught of e-mails from the Borat Fan Club addressed to “Howie Hitler” or “humorless bafoon” (sic). God knows, the stoners have plenty of time on their hands.

Some deep thinkers have been saying that this is a generational thing - Borat’s supporters on the youthful side, and the cops, pols and media a bunch of wrinkly Baby Boomers.

I agree, there is a divide here. But it’s not between generations, it’s between people who smoke pot every day and those who don’t. Those who have jobs and those who don’t. Those who go to the HempFest on the Common every September, and those who don’t. Those who live at home with their parents at age 30, and those who don’t.

I’m looking at the first state police booking report, and Borat lists his address as his “foster dad’s” in Arlington. As for Sean Stevens, he’s 28, and he didn’t get his driver’s license until last year, when he was 27.

Can someone say, “Looooooooooser!” Actually, though, that gives me an idea for a nickname for Stevens. Since he apparently never drives, let’s call him “the Pedestrian.”

There’s a story online from the Arlington Advocate about Borat’s journey from Third World illegal alien to slacker “performance artist.”

The story says he was interviewed while “on tour as a video artist for the British psychedelic quartet the Ozric Tentacles.”

Like, dude, that is just so totally . . . Uh, like, pass the brownies, man.

Was he here legally? Apparently not always, because the story says the Rich family tried to get him readmitted to the high school “as an undocumented alien following the expiration of his visa.”

And how did he support himself? “With help from the Social Action Committee of First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington.”

A (sometimes) illegal alien living off (church) welfare. I think this is where I came in.

I know, I’m just envious - I wish I could sleep until noon every day. As an e-mailer named Razi put it, “Your words certainly reveal that we artists are secretly envied by people like you.”

Or as a hempster named Jacob told me, “Keep writing (expletive) articles, Howie! Us unemployed stoners will keep laughing at you!”

Keep causing bomb scares, stoners, and us squares will keep locking you up.

Can you get the Cartoon Network in jail, dude?

No one made any bomb threats and no one made any fake bombs.

Nail them for putting up signs without a permit but blaming them for the incompetence of the police department isn't their fault.

This has already been debated to extremes so I'm not going to continue it now. I don't have time.

To what do you attribute the Hempsters' need to videotape, then?

What does the videotape have to do with anything?

People videotape all kinds of things.

Did you see the videotape? If anything it shows just how non threatening this "event" was.

And if it was a real threat you would be bitching...Boston is not equipped to handle terrorists.

I think everyone who lives, works, plays and is buried in Bean Town should sue Tuner and send these two freaks to the slammer.

What is it that people do not understand? Unknown black boxes wired underneath bridges or overpasses is non-threatening? In this post 9/11 world? Not like the people who perpetrated 9/11 would ever stoop so low as to put explosives inside a toy, that would be too uncivilized.

Rumor is not fact.

If that were the fact fine, charge them with false 911 call.

What you don't understand is that these things were no where near large enough to take down a bridge. It wasn't difficult to see what they were, especially for a "trained professional" that should have known better.

If terrorist want to take down the bridge they'll fill a tractor trailer with explosives and drive it across the bridge without all the hype.

For those who haven't seen it, here's the "bombs" being placed:

Boston moronic panic response is the problem . This was an advertising gimmick and the city is getting 2 million. Looks like the city profited by the stupidity. Now will they rebate that to the drivers who were so inconvenience by the city's stupidity. Of course not.

The city was at fault for their over reaction. NONE of the other cities acted so stupidly. They probably wish they had now that Boston has profited

Too bad for them they weren't just child sex offenders. They'd have gotten nothing more than community service in Massachusetts.

How was the police department incompetent? And you know very well the bombs didnt have to be big enough to take the bridge down to cause widespread terror. The bridge would have been closed for a long time just to check out the integrity. Its asinine to cover for these two idiots unless you work for Ted.

Got a lot of experience dealing with bombs do you. (Snort) You'd pee your pants if you walked up on one half that size.

You would think that after finding the first one the cops would have figured out what the rest were without having to shut down the city. Then again, these are the people who keep blessing the nation with Kennedys.

Nobody seems to be saying what the people who put the signs up should be charged with.

Totally agree. NYC didn't have one 911 call about these boxes. It's almost as if Boston was itchin to make some money off this thing that they went all out. The payout is certainly incentive for other cities to go apesh*t in the future.

Hm. Okay, I suppose you are saying that a chunk of C4 about the size of that little box would not be able to bring down a bridge? You might know more about explosives than I do, and will concede that to you.

Is it possible that a chunk of C4 that big might kill someone who was driving over or under the bridge?

We all saw what happened when a ceiling tile fell on a motorist and killed them in Boston. Is there any reason to expect the cry of "...knew but did nothing..." would issue forth from the usual places if someone was killed?
