Hu Jintao's predecessor, Jiang Zemin, had greater support from the military for his more laissez-faire economic policies and his modernization of the Chinese military. There were far more press and internet freedoms under Jiang Zemin than under current president Hu Jintao.

In the last half century of Chinese history, the Chinese military has always been a source of right-wing influence. When the Chinese military was weakened during the 1960s, China descended into a leftist hellhole called the Cultural Revolution. By mid-1970s, troops had to be called to end that disaster.

The tensions between the Chinese military and Hu Jintao have to do with the fact that the Chinese military can see through Hu Jintao's Communist tendencies, and is suspicious of his agenda to "reinvigorate socialist ideals" in the country. And also because under Jiang Zemin, the Chinese military had greater autonomy in both its leadership and its funding practices.

Correct. Good posts. One of my asian friends was in the red guard in her youth as was everyone in her area and was deeply ashamed of it. One of the few things she spoke of with any cheer over the period was that the majority of the military held themselves aloof and curtailed some excesses, eg mking it plain to some fanatical cadre leaders that 'No, the army will not move out of your way so you can attack Hong Kong,' The PLA is a very cool and pragmatic organisation.

Hello, remember a little thing called the Korean War that China illegally butted into and INVADED and aided and abetted a criminal aggressor? 54,000 U.S. deaths and 103,000 casualties. Remember Vietnam? Again China 58,209 lives, and 35,000 casualties.

China bears full complicity for both attacks on the West, and the casualties. The Bill is mounting against China.

And then there is China's scofflawism on intellectually property. Pretending they never heard of patents or copyrights. Stealing hundreds of billions of royalties annually. And then there are your (presumably you are Chinese) criminal spy operations...stealing all the technology that you can't and haven't produced yourselves because your society is still communist, and but for the foreign enclaves, is wholly inimical to true free enterprise and individual innovation.

Then there is your massive buildup of your armed forces in totaly secrecy, excepting the Navy which you are having a hard time concealing. And it doesn't help that Hu Jintau openly declared the ambition to have a Blue Water Navy who's only conceivable purpose is to attack the United States.

And then there is your constant agitation to invade the free peoples of Taiwan. An independent...and democratic... nation. One that does not threaten Mainland China.

And then there are the constant imprecations and threats fuming selpuchrally from your media against Japan, and your thinly-disguised Party fronts staging anti-Japanese 'demonstrations.'

And now China is grasping with evil claws at the U.S. itself, with its Panama Canal Zone bribery, and its Venezuelan Dictator that it is propping up...and urging to get armed to the teeth.

No, you don't threaten anybody. Why should we feel threatened?

It would seem that your propaganda is disconnected from the reality of what your Party acknowledges. The U.S. did nothing to harm China. But the reverse is not true.

"We live in a border town and the railroad is looking to get options for an easement. A neighbor called and enlightened us saying get on the computer and look up things like corridor, Punta Colonet, containers, trucks, deep sea port, Project Thomas. Different combinations of words bring up different articles.

In a nutshell, Chinese $$$ is backing the new deep sea port to rival Long Beach on Baja. They are also backing the railroad which is part of CANAMEX Corridor running continuously from Mexico to Canada. The corridor will be used to carry millions and millions of containers full of "Asian" goods.

It looks to me like governors of the various states are working in concert to bring this corridor through their states and are doing it mainly by executive orders. Somehow, we the people are not part of the process.

The TransTexas Corridor will be bringing goods from other ports financed by the same $$$ source but from ports on mainland Mexico."

Taiwan is the canary in the coal mine for when China decides to assert dominance in East Asia.
