Harry Lee: Murder down in JP, targeting high crime areas working (gotta see the photo)

Jefferson Parish Sheriff Harry Lee said his controversial methods of cutting crime are working so far this year with three murders recorded in 2007.

Using a high-powered gun as a prop, Harry Lee defended his methods of combatting crime in predominately black neighborhoods.

Lee said that would extrapolate to an average year in Jefferson Parish following an unusually high number of murders in 2006.

He credits his use of more officers and armored vehicles in high-crime areas and he believes his plan to target, videotape and even stop people in those areas has paid off.

“I’m not targeting blacks. I’m targeting bad guys,” he said Tuesday. “At the end of the day, everybody realizes that most of the people we will be targeting will be black.”

Lee says the only thing that has changed is his wording. He said he will no longer refer to targeting blacks in high crime areas, but merely bad guys. But he added that the statistics show that most of the victims and criminals in Jefferson Parish are African-Americans.

“There are a lot of good, honest, decent, young black people needing protection, and the only people they got to protect them is us,” he said. “If someone doesn't like that, I don't give a damn.”

Lee said that just this weekend he arrested four people on drug and weapons charges in a high-crime west bank neighborhood and he says he is going forward with his aggressive plans.

“The NAACP didn't like my plan. I said, ‘Okay, you don't like my plan, we'll use your plan.’ They said, ‘We don't have a plan.’ Well then shut up and let me do my job.’”

I live in a low crime area that's predominantly white. However the few crimes that happen here tend to be committed by whites.

It only makes sense that crimes committed in predominantly black areas would mostly be committed by blacks.

If any crimes are committed anywhere in the USA,we are all supposed to assume a white (rich or poor) man is the primary suspect.
We really should change that assumption, because white women have a tenuous population lead, last time I checked the census.
So no matter what the actual crime victim says about the alleged perpetrator, the police should first search out and question first poor white women, then rich white women, poor white men, rich white men, and if that fails, perhaps the police will be allowed to question individuals who match the description of the alleged criminal.
