If I thought he viewed gun control as an agenda item he was planning to push at the federal level... I'd also be against him.
But I don't think that's the case. Crime is mostly down around the country, and such gun control in the wake of 9/11 just doesn't seem ready to hit the national radar. There's bigger fish to fry, probably for the next couple of Presidential terms and then some.
In the 90's gun control was a central issue getting lots of attention. Crime was up and that was giving the issue traction and it was getting lots of air play. But it's fallen to the periphery in the wake of much more urgent issues. Even the democrats aren't making a big push for gun control nationally.
Don't misunderstand me-- the 2nd amendment is my big hot-button issue too. But even if Rudy is OK with more restrictions, I don't think it's going to matter.
I would like to hear him speak more on the issue, and stake out this position more clearly and more often. I think he will, and I'm expecting to be satisfied that he's no threat to my guns. We'll see.
I'm sure we'll find out one way or another up here in New Hampshire. Overtures have been made to him by some of the staunchest pro-gun conservatives in the state, so perhaps he's persuadable to see the light on the issue of the basic human right to self-defense.
I have a bridge that I would like to sell you.
