KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) - A Big Island genealogist has discovered presidential hopeful Senator Barack Obama has some ancestral ties to the White House and colonial Virginia. Bruce Harrison, founder of the Waikoloa-based Family Forest Project, says he found links between the Democratic senator from Illinois and Presidents George Washington, James Madison, Harry Truman and Jimmy Carter.

There are various Dunham genealogies on the Internet. One family comes from West Virginia, where Washington had relatives, so it's possible there's a connection.

Considering his name, Obama would more likely be a direct descendant of Mohammad ...

He might not be the only one:

That may be overstating things, but even the British royal family is said to have had Black (and presumably Muslim or Jewish) ancestors.

Since Jorge didn't have any natural children (that anyone knows of), that means we have to trace relationships to George through his grandparents ~ for example, the Ball family (or Boualle family) ~ both of which lived in Virginia from the earliest colonial times, in the same areas, but we just don't know who, which and what.

The current approach is to tie George and his brother to a supposed mother whose parents arrived in or near Jamestown toward the end of Bacon's Rebellion.

Always remember, George's family arrived in a wild and wooly America where nearly all the men were tatooed from head to toe, and guys who went about unarmed were shortly dead. Polite gentlemen from London were loathe to leave the boat.
