Space shuttle astronaut arrested at OIA on attempted kidnapping, battery charges
Orlando Sentinel ^ | February 5, 2007 | Henry Pierson Curtis

A NASA astronaut is charged with attacking her rival for another astronaut's attention early Monday at Orlando International Airport, the Orlando Sentinel has learned.

Lisa Marie Nowak drove from Texas to meet the 1 a.m. flight of a younger woman who had also been seeing the male astronaut Nowak pined for, according to Orlando police.

Nowak -- who was a mission specialist on a Discovery launch last summer -- was wearing a trench coat and wig and had a knife, BB pistol, rubber tubing and plastic bags, reports show. Once U.S. Air Force Capt. Colleen Shipman arrived, Nowak followed her to the airport's Blue Lot for long-term parking, tried to get into Shipman's car and doused her with pepper spray, according to reports.

"Don't astronauts go through psychological screening?"

You have to be a little loopy to be rocketed to the moon?

She has to be on crack or meth.

Probably not. I'm thinking the stress finally got to her -- she sounds delusional.

I'd wager a 2007 nickel that the standards used for men, are not used for women (intellectually, physically or psychologically).

No bet here.

At least she has her 20+ years in..., her Navy and NASA careers are toast! Hopefully, she'll be able to pull herself together with couseling. I've known a few highly successful people who have gone off the deep-end over relationships! Some recovered..., some did not...

Best for all if she just retires from the Navy and gets on with life.

There are over 100 active astronauts on the NASA duty roster.
If we had two crews (14 astronauts) dedicated to each of the three remaining shuttles, we would need less than half the astronaut corps we actually have.

They also found diapers, which Nowak said she used so she wouldn't have to stop on the 1,000-mile drive.

Ewwwwwwww

Dude, Jane Fonda is NOT Barbarella. One's a real person, one's a movie character.

Hmmm...She drove over a thousand mile to get Orlando? That's an awfully long time to think about what you are doing, and still she went through with it. She sounds like a pretty sad, desperate woman. I hope she gets the help she so obviously needs.

This is horrible sad. To have such a rare and wonderful career, only to through it away in such a foolish manor. I will say a prayer for her tonight. I may even shed a few tears.
