LAHORE, Pakistan: A senior figure in an outlawed Sunni Muslim militant group that has been linked to al-Qaida was among six men arrested last week in eastern Pakistan, a police official said Monday. The suspect was identified as Rizwan Ahmed, 28, head of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, a Sunni organization banned in 2001 over allegations that it was involved in killing Shiite Muslims, said Omar Virk, a senior detective in the eastern city of Lahore. "He was made Lashkar-e-Jhangvi chief after the arrest of Akram Lahori," another purported head of the group who was detained by police in 2002, Virk said.
Ahmed and five other alleged Lashkar-e-Jhangvi members were arrested in Lahore on Jan. 28 on suspicion that they were planning attacks during the Shiite festival of Ashoura, which ended last Tuesday. A senior counterterrorism official at the Ministry of Interior confirmed that the arrested men were from Lashkar-e-Jhangvi but would not say whether Ahmed was the group's leader.
