WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. presidential candidate John Edwards on Sunday said that he would raise taxes, chiefly on the wealthy, to pay for expanded healthcare coverage under a plan costing $90 billion to $120 billion a year to be unveiled on Monday.
"We'll have to raise taxes. The only way you can pay for a healthcare plan that cost anywhere from $90 to $120 billion is there has to be a revenue source," Edwards said on NBC's Meet the Press news program.
The 2004 vice presidential nominee and former North Carolina senator said his plan would "get rid of George Bush's tax cuts for people who make over $200,000 a year."

"We should have brokerage houses report the capital gains that people are incurring because we're losing billions and billions of dollars in tax revenue," Edwards said.

It would expand Medicaid, the state-federal health insurance plan for the needy, and offer subsidies for the uninsured. He said, "We ask employers to play a bigger role, which means they either have to have coverage or they have to buy into what we're calling health markets."

A man who made his fortune suing doctors and insurance companies, thereby driving up medical costs and driving doctors out of practice, now calls for public health care, and of course would have to raise our taxes to pay for it.
But they don't care. In NJ they've overspent so much their answer is to sell the highways for 75 years, and allow the new owners to raise tolls every year. Oh yeah, I left off daily bridge and highway tolls.
NEVER occurs to them to cut spending. Think of how big an economy NJ has, they are taking 7% of every penny spent on every sale, and that's just a drop in the tax bucket for them.
Yes John Edwards! Run for POTUS by saying you will raise taxes! Excellent political maneuver!
At least Edwards is telling it like it is. This is a sure fire way to lose the primary/general election.
Why doesn't he just sell that monstrosity of a house he just built.
It's all liberals know how to do. Their brains are hard wired to raise taxes, fund socialism, oh and don't forget gun control, so you can't do anything about it..
I wonder if he volunteers to pay extra taxes every year in order to help the country. I bet he, like so many of his rich democrat buddies like Terry Kerry, makes a good deal of his money via tax free investments. Didn't Mrs. Kerry pay something like 4% of her income in taxes? These rich buggers in Washington write tax laws with loopholes that only benefit the very very rich, take advantage of them, then yell that the rich don't pay their fair share. This argument is getting very tiresome.
He is going to raise taxes only on the "rich." lol
Too bad, it is Edwards who tells it as it is, not Hillary and/or Obama.
Both men advocate more spending on their favored causes - spending by government. Their own behavior favors personal benevolence over government generosity. Maybe it's the efficiency of directing their own money, but if it works for the mega-wealthy, it works for the rest of us.
But both men receive accolades for their generosity and little criticism for removing billions of dollars from federal grasp. They are still free to advocate for taking the estates from the rest of us.
I was thinking the same thing. This jerk got rich ruining health care.
Speaking of taxes and NJ, check this out; Recently I got backpay from a job I use to have in NJ (I live in New York now)...The gross was about $1400 and after taxes I went home with $748! And I`m lower income, I drive a taxi right now, yet they still took 50%!! And this Edwards is talking about raising taxes? He`s freggin` out of his mind! If I`m paying 50% what are the "rich" paying, 60-70%?? What does he want, to have them pay 80-90%?? Oh that will just be lovely for the economy not to mention the jobs the wealthy create. Goddammit I can`t stand these psychopath libs!!!! ARRGH!
A way to fund this is put a 5% tax on the sale of investments. This would exclude normal income and dividends. If these moonbats really want to put their money where their mouth is, they (the rich) will be putting up the money.
Interesting that the democrat candidates are increasingly running to the left of Hillary--something I really didn't think possible.
Edwards is a hypocrite. He did financial maneuvers to avoid Medicare/Medicaid taxes on his tens of millions of profit from court cases. Will the MSM discuss this? I'm not holding my breath.
So, after medical care has been socialized in this country, who are the ambulance chasing lawyers going to sue when somebody succumbs to some incurable disease or un-repairable accident? Nowadays they can sue the doctor for failing to fix the unfixable. When the doctor works for the government, are they going to sue the government?
No way this is going to happen without special provisions inserted into the law to make it easy for the ambulance chasers to extract their pounds of flesh from the government hide. They'll probably stream-line the process, in the interests of efficiency. Simply submit your form in triplicate, and your million dollar settlement check drawn on the US Treasury will be mailed out within 6 to 8 weeks.
That`s why he wants to put more money into it, so he can get even richer. To me it`s not the cost of healthcare that is the problem, it`s the leeches like him who sue the hell out of it. How many people know about the liability insurance doctors pay? Obstetricians alone pay $20,000 a MONTH! Why? So when some crack addicted whore gives birth to a kid with flippers, slime like Edwards can get paid off for her irresponsibility. And where does that cost get passed onto? Me and you!
Like a friend of mine was saying, if car mechanics were sued at the rate the health care industry is, it would cost you $50,000 to get a fan belt changed. It`s totally out of control this constant assault on healthcare. And this leech wants to be POTUS? To quote Theresa Heinz, he can "Shove it!"
Because in the *2 Americas* there's only room for One John Edwards.
