Dear Jim Robinson,
"Or is it too much to ask of the politician asking for our support for the highest office in the land to respect and abide by conservative principles and the basic planks of the party platform?"
How narrow-minded of you, how "Little Tent" of you.
You're obviously one of those 100%ers, the Unappeasables who actually insist that the Republican Party run a conservative for the presidency. Get with the times, JimRob, conservatism has "evolved." Republicans don't want those crazy fundamentalist, narrow-minded, theocratic Christians running the show anymore. Republicans want to be the party of low taxes, war, and "compassion."
Haven't you read what's being written on your own forum? Plenty of folks want to rid the party of the destructive influence of us evil social conservatives, us awful pro-lifers, those of us who believe that the family is the first social unit, and that family precedes the state.
Except, they, of course, want us to continue to vote for them, even as they adopt an anti-life, anti-human agenda.
Pay attention! With Mr. Giuliani leading the parade, the NEW Republican Party will lead us into the post-Christian, post-traditional morality, post-social conservative era, where there will be abortions, homosexual marriages, warrantless searches and seizures for everyone!
But no guns!
* sigh *

I believe the correct terminology that has been applied is "zealots". Supporters of Terri Schiavo were also blamed for 2006's loss, though it's unlikely the majority of the country remembers that even happening their attention span is so limited. Oh, and something about how the Win at Any Cost'ers won't "let the religious right dictate who the candidate will be." I guess being against abortion, the homosexual agenda, and gun-grabbing are only God-driven ideals.
The 2008 threads sole purpose is becoming to bash other members whose opinions differ on WHAT an "electable" candidate is, and WHAT issues matter in this election and in a candidate. Pre-emptive bashing: it's all the rage.
We all want the same thing. Victory. But some of us aren't willing to back a candidate just because they have an "R" behind their name when the traditions and significance of that "R" mean nothing to them.
Rudy maybe considered a fiscal conservative by NYCity standards, but outside the confines of the blue northeast and other liberal enclaves around the nation, he remains what he's always been. A liberal to his core values and beliefs.
As JimRob posted:
".... I just do not believe that an abortionist, gay rights gungrabber is going to get much support from red state conservatives."
And Jim is absolutely right.
