I usually come down on the freedom side of this issue. I don't care who looks at what, as long as they stay away from the kids and the illegal stuff.

But these people who have to do it at work astound me. We've had a bunch of them where I work, and a bunch of viruses and strange spyware are all over our computers. We can't get them to work half the time. Downloading porn at work should be grounds for dismissal.

It should be possible to restrict the web sites, programs and files that a company's computers will allow past the firewall.

In addition to pornography, there is gambling, chatting and just plain surfing that eats up time.

You're putting up with a lot of crap where you work. Maybe it's common these days. There have always been jerks and slackers in the workforce, but years ago this kind of stuff couldn't be blamed on computer access.

Even without that temptation, lazy people will still find a way shift work on the honest folks, while they "charm" their way into everyone's hearts, including the boss's!

"...Downloading porn at work should be grounds for dismissal...."

It is where I work.

I work in IT, and some of the stuff I have seen on the computers is pretty nasty. I have had to track down who did it (sometimes possible) and let them know the consequences. I don't see many repeat offenders.

But, it is also true the stuff get sent directly in email.
