If this happened in November, Obama is still the President-Elect, and would have no power until January 20, 2009. Bush woud be in charge.

The purpose was not to offend, but to point out a possibility: that a Christian oriented, military strongman could come to power if our country experiences a civil war. A large portion of our armed forces, especially the combat units, are drawn from the South and rural areas where evangelical Protestantism is dominant. A large number of enlisted men and officers hold the bicoastal culture in contempt and would detest a liberal Democrat in the White House. Should the executive and legislative branches of government become dominated by liberals in 2009, they may feel bold enough to suppress the conservative churches, talk radio, and the Internet, declare "gay marriage" a Constitutional right, confiscate firearms, nationalize medical care, and harshly regulate automobile usage for environmental reasons. Combine such a regime with some unanswered attack by Muslim terrorists, or Chinese or Russians using the Muslims as a smokescreen, that destroyed several American cities and a strongman type might well arise.
I did not intend any comparison between Cromwell and Franco, except insofar as they both were military leaders who came to power by toppling an existing regime.
