I don’t know about you, but I’m with George W on this one: It’s time for surge!
Yes, let’s surge into Iraq with another 20,000 – put ‘em out there in the hot spots, sweating sniper fire, praying that the car that just pulled up doesn’t explode in hellish fury, fretting that anyone (everyone!) could be a suicide bomber. I salute you, Mr. War President, for escalating America’s military presence in this civil war, asking even more of our people to step up, step in, and sacrifice their jobs, time, limbs... and lives.
The only proviso that I attach to my gung-ho endorsement of your exciting surge strategy is this: None of the 20,000 additional troops that you’re committing should come from the ranks of people who’ve already been there, many on their fourth, fifth, and even sixth rotation. Excuse me, but it’s the stuff of tortuous war crimes to keep circling the same people through that shooting gallery.
Instead, here’s my plan: Draft Young Republicans! Yes – they’ve been your most ardent cheerleaders for invading, occupying, and staying the course in Iraq; they have been on the front lines jeering and sneering at war protesters, they have bravely attached those yellow Support-Our-Troops magnets to their SUVs, they have consistently voted for you and your war. So, I say: Give it to ‘em!
It’s nice that your own daughters – Jenna and Barbara – have supported your Iraq policy rhetorically, but, come on, why not put their boots on the ground too? Give ‘em a chance to prove what they’re made of. Those Halliburton executives, too – draft all of their twenty-somethings. And don’t forget Cheney’s young relatives.
Any young Republican who says “Support Our Troops” – should become one. Surely, sir, you can find a mere 20,000 of them willing to sign up for your “noble cause.” The least you can do is ask them. Or are you afraid of what they’d say?
Mr. Hightower suggests that he would support a troop surge if those who presently support the war were the ones actually doing the fighting. Mr. Hightower opines that young Republicans should be drafted to fight if they support the war so much. Although, I suspect there are many supporters of the war on terror who do not consider themselves Republicans, I do agree with Mr. Hightower in one respect. Only those who support the war should be asked to fight it. Fortunately, the Congress, the President, and the American people share that opinion, since the last time I looked, which was when I put on the uniform this morning, we do have an all volunteer military.
Mr. Hightower, can sleep soundly tonight, knowing it is in fact those who support the war effort and those who consider it a noble cause that are doing the fighting, and when necessary, the dying. No one is asking Mr. Hightower, to shed one tear, one bead of sweat, or one drop of blood. While Mr. Hightower, is sipping his morning coffee and gloating over what Im sure he perceives as his latest rhetorical masterstroke, better men than he will be strapping on body armor, and loading magazines into M-16s, and going out to face those very horrors of war that Mr. Hightower describes. Some of these men and women will in fact die, in the defense of freedom, but lest Mr. Hightower, be tempted to feel the slightest bit of sympathy for, or gratitude toward, those fallen heroes, he neednt bother, for I can assure him, they are almost universally young Republicans and other assorted war supporters.
They will be like the bunch at the top of the bulding in the movie Inependence Day.
The Dems just love the draft.
It's be a waste of otherwise perfectly good water.
Because the answer to your question is a resounding "no".

And being an annoying a$$#0le with wit, as evidenced by Keith Olberman and Stuart Smalley.

I'll go but only if I can bring a Young Democrat to use as cover.
Hey, they wouldn't be fighting! I thought being a human shield was honorable to them?
Heck, thinking about it more, I'm sure Hummer drivers would love to have some Young Democrats as human shields. They could finally make a contribution to the war effort in a way they will feel comfortable with.
Jim, I'm worried that Molly Ivins might be lonely where she's going. Would you do us a favor and join her soon? Thanks.
I wish I could go.
My sons went over there. But that's because they CARE about the rest of us. They're willing to sacrifice for the common good even for people they don't know. Democrats wouldn't know sacrifice if it bit them on the ass. They are self-centered hypocrates who enjoy the fruits of freedom paid for by others and that they would never lift a finger to provide it for someone else.
OK, this jerk needs to sneak across the Mexican border and take up his true profession:
Butt-for-hire.
BTW, I'll go but being 50 years old and out of shape I'd be as worthless as a Congresisonal "hearing".
