Mr. Hightower suggests that he would support a troop surge if those who presently support the war were the ones actually doing the fighting. Mr. Hightower opines that young Republicans should be drafted to fight if they support the war so much. Although, I suspect there are many supporters of the war on terror who do not consider themselves Republicans, I do agree with Mr. Hightower in one respect. Only those who support the war should be asked to fight it. Fortunately, the Congress, the President, and the American people share that opinion, since the last time I looked, which was when I put on the uniform this morning, we do have an all volunteer military.
Mr. Hightower, can sleep soundly tonight, knowing it is in fact those who support the war effort and those who consider it a noble cause that are doing the fighting, and when necessary, the dying. No one is asking Mr. Hightower, to shed one tear, one bead of sweat, or one drop of blood. While Mr. Hightower, is sipping his morning coffee and gloating over what Im sure he perceives as his latest rhetorical masterstroke, better men than he will be strapping on body armor, and loading magazines into M-16s, and going out to face those very horrors of war that Mr. Hightower describes. Some of these men and women will in fact die, in the defense of freedom, but lest Mr. Hightower, be tempted to feel the slightest bit of sympathy for, or gratitude toward, those fallen heroes, he neednt bother, for I can assure him, they are almost universally young Republicans and other assorted war supporters.
