Texas Gov. orders anti-cancer vaccine

AUSTIN, Texas - Bypassing the Legislature, Republican Gov. Rick Perry signed an order Friday making Texas the first state to require that schoolgirls get vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus that causes cervical cancer.

By issuing an executive order, Perry apparently sidesteps opposition in the Legislature from conservatives and parents' rights groups who fear such a requirement would condone premarital sex and interfere with the way parents raise their children.

POSTED about a dozen times.

It just came up on AP 7 minutes before. Also, I searched "HPV" and "Texas" and nothing came up. Complain to Jim about his search, not me.

"The New Jersey-based drug company could generate billions in sales if Gardasil — at $360 for the three-shot regimen — were made mandatory across the country. Most insurance companies now cover the vaccine, which has been shown to have no serious side effects."

The real reason for the order?

It's for the kiddies, of course. /sarc

There are some cases where this could be helpful to girls to get that don't involve what you describe.

But this is really an awful thing for the school district to require just on the basis of mandating non-necessary medical treatments. What next - ordering students to limit calories to 1600 or to not eat transfats?

Since this is mostly targetted to girls around 12, if I had a daughter I'd just let her make the decision.

As cervical cancer is rare among monogamous women who have monogamous husbands/partners, and any vaccine or medication has side effects, why are we rushing headlong to give girls this vaccine?

Wouldn't we be doing more for public health by discouraging promiscuous behavior in teenagers?

And what about other diseases / infections? With AIDS for example, we were told that rubber was the answer. So condoms and "safe sex" became the watchword. So then, why isn't rubber the answer to this, if we want to assume that so many girls are having sex, that they need a vaccine?

Or are too many people not bothering with a condom? So then the condom message doesn't matter anymore?

What is the reasoning of people who come up with vaccinnation requirements? Communicable disease prevention is one thing, but a sexually transmitted disease process like this can be virtually eradicated by not being promiscuous.

I think the legislature has grounds for an impeachment considering this is an illegal order.

What planet did you come from?

Most human adults have had more than one sex partner, in fact it's the norm rather than the exception. The sex drive is a basic drive, like that for water or food, and is essential to maintain the species. All the moralizing in the world cannot change basic human behavior.

I thought for sure this wouldn't happen for years, if then.

"Required."

Unbelievable.

Parents, open your mouths and say, "Hell, NO!"

Under what legal authority is Perry mandating this? I'm not sure he can do this without the Legislature passing a law first.

Nothing like making yourself richer.

Maybe it is the Governor who owns the stock in MERC?

Most the kids I knew growing up were NOT having sex at age 12. There may have been one girls, but that was it. So make all the kids get tested because of a few sluts. Yeah that's a great policy.

Why not just make everyone have sex to preserve the species as well.

What can it hurt to be safe-guarded against a communicable disease that can cause cancer? No one is suggesting that the girls go out and have sex, but many of them will do so as they approach their emancipating birthday. The plan to vaccinate accepts the reality of growing up: young adults will engage in sex. At what age they will begin is unpredictable, but most likely after pubescence. Assuming the vaccine is safe, what's the harm?

The only reason that I didn't vote for Kinky last election is that I was assured that at least Rick Perry wouldn't embrace a bunch of whack-job liberal social values.

Color me stupid, here.

I never thought that I'd live to see the day when a supposedly conservative Texas would o.k. mandatory STD vaccinations for 12 year-old girls.
