U.S. halts China space ventures

The Bush administration has suspended plans to develop space ventures with China, including joint exploration of the moon, in reaction to Beijing's Jan. 11 test of an anti-satellite weapon that left orbiting debris threatening U.S. and foreign satellites.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration spokesman Jason Sharp said the weapon test undermined an agreement reached between President Bush and Chinese President Hu Jintao during an April summit.

"We believe China's development and testing of such weapons is inconsistent with the constructive relationship that our presidents have outlined, including on civil space cooperation," Mr. Sharp said.

He said there were "some initial discussions looking at where there were mutual interests where we could cooperate with the Chinese," but there are no plans for future discussions. The two presidents had hoped to work on joint moon exploration and space-debris avoidance.

Bush administration officials said the suspension is meant to signal U.S. displeasure with the anti-satellite weapon (ASAT) test, as well as Beijing's failure to provide an explanation for its space arms program.

Immediately place an import ban on all Chinese products. You will see our manufacturing sector absolutely explode with more jobs than you can imagine.

WOW! Looks like China has started something... possibly something they weren't ready for quite yet.

Kudos to Bush for the firm reaction. Does anyone think that a Dem would've done this?

(More likely, they would've given China a few rockets in hopes of making them slow down their progress... which, of course, it wouldn't.)

"develop space ventures with China"

Why would we need to be in a space venture with China? We already gave them multiple deployment capability for their MIRVS. They can give us NOTHING.

They have had men in space -0- times. They have not even made a capsule that will carry a man to space. WE HAVE DONE IT ALL in space, they have only put up satellites.

A joint venture usually means both parties get something out of the deal. So what can they give us???????

Trade regulation is a form of government intervention in the economy. Intervention is communism. How can you call yourself a conservative?

[/Sarcasm]

I agree. America doesn't trade with Cuba; why should it trade with China. The days when China was a strategic bulwark against Soviet expansion are over. Don't count on the Bush administration to do anything about it, not with a Treasury Secretary who's made a fortune off Chinese investments.

I'm tired of these politicians who have absolutely no patriotism when it comes to financial matters.

Hopefully Duncan Hunter's candidacy will change things, but I doubt it. He's not even listed on MSM presidential polls. It's possible they won't invite him to the debates. They'll portray him as a fringe candidate. In 20 or 30 years, we'll see who was right.

China has put 2 men into orbit. That fact aside, China has contributed nothing to our own space program.

And it's nice to see the Bush Administration play hardball with Beijing.

Fair enough. Bush is much less subservient than Clinton, but I'm not completely satisfied.

Since Chinamen are so small it was the same endeavor as putting one man into orbit. Besides that we did that nearly 50 years ago. Hell, they just now started mass production of a Supersonic fighter the J-10 or something. Well, whatever chinese food is good anyway.

Move our facilities to Mexico. We could solve the immigration problem at the same time.

Space debris cooperation. The Chinese must have been rolling on the floor laughing after we signed that one.

We need to quit "cooperating" with China. We give and they take. We shouldn't sell them a damn thing more complicated than a toothpick. We should send their spies home. I have waited in vain for someone to point out that China on its own could not have shot that satellite out of the sky without the technology and know-how they stole from our country with the Clinton administration's cooperation. Sandy Burgler should be in prison.THE CHINESE INVENTED NOTHING, THEY STOLE EVERYTHING. Make no mistake. They will never deal fairly and squarely with us, they don't know how. They will take advantage and steal and spy until they feel strong enough to strike at the United States.

Which the American consumer will pay through the eye for when prices for same products are two to three times as high. Plus, every oner of those jobs will go to union members.

Two questions for you:
*Do Americans really want manufacturing jobs? do you?
*Do you want to pay $600 for your 30GB iPod?

Move our facilities to Mexico. We could solve the immigration problem at the same time.

I believe that was what happened in the early 1990s under the farce called NAFTA. I think our immigration problem has since quadrupled and Mexican industries have failed to perform to expectations. Any other ideas?

Wikipedia is your friend ;^)"

On June 22, 2006, Long Lehao, deputy chief architect of the lunar probe project, laid out a schedule for China's lunar exploration. He set 2024 as the date of China's first moonwalk.

Sun Laiyan, administrator of the China National Space Administration, said on July 20, 2006, that China would start deep space exploration focusing on Mars over the next five years, during the 11th Five-Year (2006-2010) Program period.

The first unmanned Mars exploration program should take place between the 2014-2033 period, followed by a manned phase in 2040-2060.

Moreover, in order to make manned flight in deep space toward Mars safer, a space weather forecast system will be completed by 2012 with the Kuafu mission satellites placed at the Lagrangian Point L1.

Chief designer of the Shenzhou spacecraft Qi Faren has stated in 2006 that "the Chinese manned space program was not aimed at sending tourists into space, but instead at preparing for the exploration of Mars and Saturn safely"
