Garands (not the later development we know and love as the M14) have two big problems - extremely limited magazine capacity and they tell the enemy when you're out of ammo. Not good.

The BAR is a good design, but it's really too heavy to use in anything but the SAW role.

I've talked to guys who got their CIBs in WW2. They told me sometimes they'd reload, fire a round, and then throw out a clip so the Germans could hear it bounce on the ground. The Germans thought they were reloading when they actually had seven shots locked and loaded.

Hell of a way for a man to make a living. And folks think the Superbowl's a big deal.

"Fighting the last war"...
Garand was built (1936) with an 8 round magazine & that god awful clip because a flat bottom was believed better for trenches and for use of a sandbag rest.

On the other hand, if you keep a couple of spare "clips" handy, you can just toss one out and create the appearances of being out of ammo.

Surprise!

The M-14 was far less maintenance than the M-16. Now I would love to see the BAR come back. That was a great Rifle.
