Taleban forces in southern Afghanistan have taken control of a town which British troops had pulled out of after a peace deal with local elders.
Some local people said they were leaving the town, Musa Qala in Helmand province, for fear of bombing raids on the Taleban by Nato forces.
US commanders and diplomats had criticised the deal.
They said it had not been done with elders but with the Taleban themselves and was not the way to defeat them.
Controversial change
The BBC's Alastair Leithead in Kabul says the loss of Musa Qala to the Taleban is a blow to the strategy of establishing peace deals in Helmand

its really hard (near impossible) to fight a war when you are allied with pacifists
It looks like Britian may have "gotten the message" from the november elections as well.
I'd suggest we all start learning Arabic, but what's the point, we won't be able to say much with our heads laying next to our dead bodies.
Patton is rolling over in his grave
BTW, this should have been posted to the "Things That Make Your Head Explode" board
;-)
Defeatists always get what they bargained for: defeat.
Since when do we bargain with the taliban? This was boneheaded from the word GO.
Western civilization has lost its mind, its balls, its will. Losing everything else comes next.
Daisy Cutter Time.
Yeah, I hope they have all the GPS coordinates for that village.
"Western civilization has lost its mind, its balls, its will. Losing everything else comes next."
Yep. It's sad this had to happen during my lifetime. Thanks, hippies. You have all but destroyed the world.
Not just allied with pacifists, we are currently surrounded by them, especially in Congress. Do these people have any idea what will happen when/if these moslems - and OK, I will say it: there are no moderates among them; they are all terrorists, some are just louder than others - take over? They are just here waiting to achieve critical mass (Has anyone ever, any place, seen a moslem woman who is not pregnant and dragging at least 3 children with her?) and then look out. I really would rather fight them in Iraq and Iran than in Chicago and Louisville, but the democrat party - with a lot of help from some Republicans - seem to be choosing otherwise.
The AMericans will be taking the lead in this area in the next few days. The taliban retaking the town was NOT part of the negotiations with the towns leaders, and in fct the taliban apparently killed some of those leaders. So now the yanks will clean up the mess.
This only means a bit more saliva for the BBC and NYT who hope for the great "Taliban Spring Offensve" every year. You have my word, that this town will be retaken within the next days or weeks.
Nontheless a incredibly stupid move by the Brits. This is justanother PR victory for the jihadis and their liberal allies.
Don't forget to buy you a coply of the Qur'an while you are at it... you are gonna need it...
Hell yeah he is. "I don't like to bleed for the same ground twice," he said. I've lost count over the number of villages we've "retaken". I'm ready to just start clearing them off the map.
I cannot believe these ragtags from the dark ages essentially win over the finest, most modern forces in the world. Oprah should try to build a luxurious school for girls there. Hah.
Deals with the locals really worked at Tora Bora. Fool me once, shame on you.
Yeah the Russians tried your "clearing them off the map."
How did that work out for them?
