Feds Probe Suspicious Fires At Two L.A. Churches
CBS) LOS ANGELES ^ | Feb 18, 2007 10:39 am US/Pacific

LOS ANGELES A suspicious fire broke out at a South Los Angeles church Saturday night, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.
The fire was reported at 8:47 p.m. at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 1284 E. 50th St., and was put out by 9:35 p.m., Los Angeles city fire spokeswoman Melissa Kelley said.
Heavy smoke came from the burning first floor and choir loft, Kelley said. No injuries were reported.
Most of the damage was on a mezzanine level, CBS 2 reported. The sanctuary of the church escaped damage, according to Channel 2.
Church member Bob Hewins told the station Sunday was the pastor's second anniversary, and services would be held in the parking lot if necessary.
The FBI, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and arson investigators went to the scene, according to the camera crew, indicating that the fire was of suspicious origin and was possibly being investigated as a hate crime.
In Boyle Heights about 7 p.m., firefighters were sent to Assumption Church at Evergreen Avenue and Blanchard Street, where someone threw a homemade firebomb, said fire Capt. Sparky Holloway.
The fire burned itself out before firefighters arrived, he said.
It was unclear if the two incidents were related, he said.

Granger Church Fire Ruled Arson
A weekend fire at a Granger church was apparently no accident.
Investigators say a fire at Northpointe Bible Church on State Road 23, near Adams was deliberately set.
The fire damage was discovered Sunday morning although it was not extensive enough to cancel services last weekend.
The fire apparently went out by itself and the fire department was not called to respond.
Any attempt to burn a church is taken very seriously.
Crimestoppers is offering a reward for information leading to an arrest or conviction in the case.
